If you are talking about a climbing stand....gorilla makes a good one for around $100.....Lock on's.....gorilla also makes a good stand for about $45 at walmart. I own both and really enjoy them! JMO......

That also depends if you are a versital hunter or like to hunt in a more isolated area?? If i had the choice and could only choose one i would go with the climber just because you can go just about ANYWHERE with it and it also goes in and out of the woods with you......IT CAN NOT GET STOLEN!!!!!!!

all depends on where you hunt and if you know the area well...

if you know you want to hunt the same spot put a lock on up, or a ladder stand...

if you're going someplace for the first time and you may not go back and you don't want to get stuck with a lock on there, get a climber...

I use a Summit Climber, 180MAX ( i think ) had to go with this one because of the weight limits! I was real fat back then, now I'm only fat!! HA HA HA

SUMMIT!!!

They are a little pricey at first but worth every penny. Extremely comfortable for all day hunts, easily removable so they don't get stolen and light enough to pack in where you need to go. I love mine and after trying it out once my dad and buddy both bought one.

ps: never leave you stands in trees if you don't want them to walk off.

I too would concur with Gorilla. I also really liked my Bigfoot XL hang on. Someone else liked it enough to take it.

yeah, when you hunt on a unlimited I live in my parent's basement budget.

Give me $400 and I'll buy a decent climber and 3 hang ons before I buy a Lonewolf. Not because Lonewolf isn't good, just because they cost too much.

I have a climber. Climbers don't go in every tree I want to go in. Most trees in Ohio have limbs on them. I want to pick my spot, not my stand pick my spot for me.

that is where the money starts coming into play as the features add to the price...

if you want an open front or closed front, sit/stand or just stand?, hug the tree or sit and pull? weight requirements?

Personally I need an open front, I don't shoot sitting down, and I hate hugging trees to climb them, especially in the rain/sleet/snow as they get very slick.

for all these the Summit Viper series was a clear winner for me. I think I paid 150 used.

Whats your budget look like?

Lonewolf and Summit are the best. Consequently, the most expensive. My climber is so cheap, I really don't even know who makes it. It weighs about 80lbs. Good thing I'm tough.

I started using a Gorilla, it was solid but not comfortable and a pain to carry. I got an 07 Summit Viper used for $125.00; I'll never go back. I'm with Dredly - a comfortable stand is worth it.

You won't find a Lone Wolf climber for that!
I currently have one and love it but the Gorilla is also a great stand.

Summit is the only way to go, I had back surgery a couple years ago and a 4 hour sit in a lock on is all I can take. The viper gives me the comfort to sit all day.:D

Now that's tougher. If I bowhunted only I'd probably go with the open front. The goliath is a good choice if you have a large build. The 180 could be interesting as a multiple weapon stand, but I decided the Viper with a rest would be best for me. Mine came with a bow holder which is kind of nice as well.

One additional thought, the paint around the contact points chipped on mine and from what I've read it's not uncommon. It doesn't hurt anything but I didn't want you to be surprised.

I just picked up 2 Gorilla Expeditions yesterday. I happened on a great deal, $50 each originally $100. After hearing good things about them I couldn't pass on them. I have yet to hang and sit in them but they seem solid, and at 18 pounds they better be. I like the eXtreme Leveling System concept so I am excited to try them in trees I normally would stay away from.

Go with the viper SS or the Open shot. Spend a little more on aluminum to save the weight. Your back will thank you if you ever have to pack it in more than a mile or two.

They're not hard to use JesseT and they're really quite solid - you just have to get used to it; it may seem less sound than it really is (I wasn't deer hunting when some of the early ones were around and I've heard they would slide on you. :scared: ). With the sit and climb type you sit on the bar opposite the seat and put you feet under the straps or Summit has a really nice system on their platform - check out their website - and start by putting both parts of the stand around the tree at enough of an angle that when you get to your height you're a still a little above level. Angle the bottom up (or down however you would call it) with your feet and pull the bottom platform up with your legs, let it out at the new level; now and stand up and pull the seat part up with your arms and sit on the bar and start the process all over again. With a little practice it's really not hard. Different stands adjust etc. a little differently so you'll want to look over the instructions for whatever stand you end up with. Get plenty of practice climbing with it before trying it in the dark the first time. Practice shooting out of it as well. I've taken deer from the ground, from fixed stands and from climbers. My only archery deer was from a climber (only been at it with a bow for 2 seasons: Bowhunting is a blast) - If I was only allowed to use one method to deer hunt...I'd choose a climber - the flexibility clinches it for me. Hope I wasn't too confusing.

I just use the ameristep climbers from wally world.I have 5 of them and i haven't found anything to gripe about, and their pretty darn comphy. They are a tad heavier than some but since i'm a fairly large guy i feel better about that.Besides,i leave them up from mid aug to end of feb and if i ever got one stollen(i haven't)which would wiss me off, i wouldn't feel as bad as if it was a higher priced one.
