I use a recurve bow and also my compound. In both I shoot carbon arrows.

I find that if you talk to traditional archers they seem to add weight to get the arrow total weight with BH up in the 550 to 650 range for punch thru on game.

I started checking my weight on my hunting arrows for the compound and they were all over as I have 3 different brands of arrow. So I picked a arrow weight I would try out and that was 425 gr for total arrow weight.

I then checked the weight of each arrow and foudn the amount I need to get to the 425 gr weight and then used 1/8 poly rope at 3.5 gr per inch to divided into the amouunt needed to equal the 425 gr. I would cut a pice of the poly 1/8 inch rope and put it into the arrow thru the nock and push to the front of the arrow. I did add a drop of glue to the rope so it would stay in the front and not move. Well so far I have been shooting for now two weeks at the 3D range daily and found I now seem to get the same arrow flight and they do seem to have extra peneration into the 3D targets...I also increased my FOC on the arrows. Any one else do this and how did it work out for you and or any negatives feedback on trying this action...

my thanks in advance

Bill

had a traditional shooter come in a while back . different breed and i dont see much of them . but one of my guys just took 17 in new york not bad considering he missed 4 targets the first day . then shot 5 points behind the winner the second day . his highlite though was a picture of him with his arm around the martin girl he had me put it up in the shop .
but this other guy when he came in and saw all the compounds started telling me all there downfalls . one was arrow weigth he said do you know that a recurve will shoot through a 1 gallon plastic jug thats hanging on a string at 25 yard and a compound wont . i said really lets see what my 350 grain arrow can do . so i went and set it up hung the jug with about 3 feet of string and shot . walked back to the line and shot . not only did i shoot through the jug i was able to stick the arrow in my bag target at 35 yards that i had lined up behind . it was kind of neat the jug went 3 or four times around the rod i had over it . i said your turn . end of conversation .
my opinion on most modern compounds is that they are a overkill for most north american game . i shot through a 1800 lb buffalo with a 425 grain arrow at 35 yards and one of my customers just took a 7 1/2 foot grizzly at 30 yards with a under 400 grain arrow shot it in the chest and the arrow was sticking 18 inchs out his butt . how much is really needed ?

There are arrows made specifically for traditional shooters with the necessary weight without adding arrow tubes and such..

Bill I've been visiting the trad sites quite bit lately. Not only do they seem to favor heavy arrows (10grains per pound +) but extreem weight forward too. As Javi mentioned there are a few carbons out there that are in the neighborhood of 13 grains per inch (shaft weight). To add more forward weight in carbons there are brass screw-in inserts to use instead of stock ones, that weigh 50-100 grains. And yes I've heard of using rope and weed-wacker string in the shafts. You could always use heavy heads too. They're available up to 200 grains or more. But unless your after moose or something of that size, I don't think adding all that trajectory is needed. Your 425 grain arrow is about what I'm shooting out of my recurve too. It should do the job on deer just fine. If I only shot targets I'd go even lighter and have a flatter shooting arrow.

Pour salt into the arrows for added weight.:peace:
