Tonight I won a gun at a raffle. I won a Tikka T3 Lite in 7mm-08. I have heard a lot a bout the caliber, but it seems to be a blande cartridge. I know that it is accurate, but I have not found a cartridge in a Remington rifle that I can not reload and cut bullet holes at a hundred yards. I was thinking of trading to a 22-250 or a 338 Federal. I want a preformer. I have not bought a rifle in 12 years. What do yooons ( PA slng:D ) think?

When my kid wanted to get a rifle for deer we went with a 7-08 because you can get a little more weight in the bullets than a 243 and not much more in recoil. Wish I could comment on anything more than 100 yard range accuracy which is pretty good. But as bunnyman asked, whats the intended primary use?

You will find the 7mm-08 a bit faster than the 308, and adequate for anything in Pa but Elk or really big Bear (over 500 lbs).
It is a round for "recoil Sensitive" shooters, IMO, meaning kids and girls, but with a synthetic stock and a rust proof barrel, as well as bright sights, as I expect it has, you would probably enjoy it, and find it shoots just as good, or better, as a .308 out to 500 yards at least. You won't feel like you're carrying or aiming a heavy log either.
You'll get good speed and K.E. out of it at any but "Sniper" distances.
Keep it and enjoy. The bolt will also have a short, fast throw, so you will get a second shot off pretty fast, compared to a 7mm or 30-06, or any other "Full size" cartridge.
You could have done much worse in a Raffle win.

I have got two 7-08, one Browning BLR and one Remmington 700. My collection will never be without one, ever. I really enjoy the round and right now and shooting reloads with Barnes triple shock bullets @ 140gr and 120gr, you really can't beat it.
I wouldn't hesitate to get another one.

A nieghbor of mine went to Africa and took most all of the plains game except for the largest with a 7mm08 It is a great youth cartridge and well a dandy flat shooter and and you can get some good numbers with handloads as well as some premium factory loads. I would love to own one myself. :D

Take it out and shoot a deer with it, you will love it. I have used a .243 for the last 15 years. It worked really well. This year i went to a 7mm-08. It's like a .243 with just a little bigger bullet. No kick, and that's key. do you want to hit what you are shooting at? or stand around wondering why your sholder hurts and why you missed. 7mm-08 is pretty much perfect for deer. Don't be fooled buy guys who think you need a cannon to take down a 150# deer. shoot once with a gun that doesn't kick and make the shot count.

In my opinion - Sell it and buy something in semi-auto assualt.
reasons:
PA is only a few years from going 100% shotgun only for deer, making your rifle useless for hunting. Which means you'll be looking at an 870 express w/ rifled barrel for less then 300 bucks, if you don't just give up rifle all together.
A weapon that will soon be illegal to purchase will skyrocket in value, plus IF you ever need it then you'll have it.

Logic? :noidea:
Reasons:
1. In the very near future PA will no longer allow hunting with standard rifles due to the number of people and the extremly high number of shootings that happen every year. I believe this is already in effect for 3 of the zones in PA (the cities) and it will be spreading soon, so the rifle he has will be for target shooting only
2. The Assualt Weapon Ban will be coming back in some form, its pretty safe to say that an AR or AK will always fall within the AWB rules, therefore buying an AR/AK now will mean you have one.
3. Buying a desireable object that will no longer be available will increase in value. We saw AK's going for over 1k when the last AWB was in place, once it expired they dropped in value. Supply and Demand, people want them, people will pay for them when they are rare or hard to find.
- Nope not pissed at the world, just have a reallly good idea of how the next few years are going to play out in PA and in the country... and none of its good.

Never said that I disagreed with you (I'm currently in the process of building another AR myself, just to be on the safe side)(I take that back, BATFE; I have no guns, none what-so-ever. No need to come to my house). I guess what I was shooting (pun intended) for was; is this logic, or does he have an inside straight on something the rest of the PA hunters need to be keenly aware of.
My question would be however, is the restricted use of rifles as hunting tools be because of an attempt to slowly ban all weapons, or is it because of the increasing density of the human population? There are very few places in any state that allows the use of rifles near large populations of people due to the increased maximum effective range (read maximum leathal range) of rifles versus shotguns/muzzleloaders/bows.

Density of people and number of hunters using what land is left. Right now they are just applying rules to select areas but every year a large number of the issues happen elsewhere in the state. Lots of hunters, less and less land... just a matter of time.
