i want to start fletching my own arrows.what is your advice on jigs that are practical, easy to use, cheap adjustable? and fletching adhesive? i have some fletch tite platinum. also what about doing it with wraps or even applying wraps?

I have a Jo-Jan single jig and it's OK. Just. It was a bit hard to set up for right helical, but I expect that's true for any jig. What I really don't like is that it doesn't line up the c**k feather exactly with the string, so I have to twist the arrow a bit to get it lined up. So, if I have to replace a vane, I have to fiddle with the arrow to get the vanes evenly spaced. I'm kinda used to it, but now and then I screw one up.

If I had it to do over, I'd get something with magnets to hold the vane in place, or maybe the Arizona jig.

I have three fletching jigs. A bitzenberger, and plastic copies by Grayling and Bohning. It's not even close. The bitzenberger is the only one that I get consistent results from. I can't get the vanes evenly spaced with the plastic jigs. One gap between vanes always seems to be wider than the others.

The fletchtite platinum is a good glue, especially for beginners. It sets up fast, but not so fast that you don't have time to make small adjustments. Be sure to clean your shafts with 100% acetone. Any glue will fail if you don't get your shafts clean.

Be sure to get 100% contact between the shaft and vane. Except with very short vanes, you will have to push up on the shaft and down on the clamp to get good contact in the middle.

I've tried wraps a couple of times without much success. They look great and protect your shaft when you remove fletching, but it was too much bother for me. Others have had great success with wraps. Also, I'm extremely obsesive compulsive about arrows and wraps added one more factor that I had to account for in getting my completed arrow weights within a grain. It's probably a waist of time, but I enjoy it.

Good luck,
Allen

I have used AAE, an old Cabelas Jig, And I finally got a Blitzburg. It is worth the money this jig will do everything you want it to. Easy to set-up and every arrow will be the same. But it is expencive.

How often do you plan to do arrows? Are you gonna do your buddies arrows, are you just hunting, or are you a 3D and target archer? these things will decide what jig to go with. If you dont do arrows alot a $20 AAE jig may be up your alley, but if you are going to do alot of arrows go with the Blits. And if you have alot of buddies to build for MABEY they will split some of the cost:noidea:

I found a bunch of used bitzenberger jigs on ebay. Will all of them handle blazers and such or do we need to look at a more up to date model?

Rino- yes If they have the jig and clamps go for it at $30-Make sure the magnets are still good. I have heard they last a lifetime. I know a guy that has 1 20yrs old and is just like new.

Gamoboy this idea is worth a look- I think I have seen some here in the for sale section.

I just do not have the space right now to set it all up. So I just take mine to Cody. When we get more space and I get a little Man Cave going then I will get more into fletching my own arrows.:peace:

Bitz's are the best, if u want a lower price bohning makes a petty good fletcher. It comes with a straight clamp but you can get a right or left. As far as glue get some goat tuff its awesome. And academy carries the bohning jig in their archery section. Most pro shops sell the goat tuff:rockon:
