Could I get your thoughts on this rule. I was hunting this year during GUN season in Mississippi and was issued a sitation for no Archery/Primitive Weapon permit. Again I was hunting during GUN season with my bow (Dec. 20 to be exact its on the ticket), went to court showed this to the Judge, he said ask the Officer, Officer said he has got to have it. Cost me $300. I said to the officer "so it cost more to hunt with a Bow during gun season than it would to hunt with a Gun during Gun season" the answer was yep. Personally i think he was wrong.

i dont know about your state, but here if you are hunting with a bow, which you can during gun and blackpowder.. you must have an archery tag. Now, you dont have to have a gun tag, but a few years ago you did.

ob 1.25 i too am a mississippi boy and all you need is a sportsman license and you are covered. if you want to bow hunt from 10-1 til 12-31 you are covered.what kind of license did you have by the way.if you just had the all game hunt and fish then the game wraden was right you DO need the archery permit. thats why i just get the sportsman license. except for duck stamps i am totally covered.

What is the current law in your state.

There saying you have to carry a special permit to hunt with a bow during gun season?

If I am interpreting this correctly it sounds like your state has a firearm season and to kill a deer during that season you have to have a firearm permit regardless if it's a bow or not? That is how I am reading this. In Indiana you can hunt with a bow during any season and all it takes is an archery permit.

The firearm license is a little screwed up here though. If you buy a regular firearms license you can only kill a buck with it. But if you buy a bonus antlerless license you can shoot a doe or button buck during any season. Now do I have anyone confused?...:noidea: :noidea:

I'm not from Mississippi but I think this law sucks. In Ohio, during gun season - you can use shotgun, muzzleloader, crossbow or bow. The one requirement is you have to have hunter's orange on (at least a vest). I've used bow and muzzleloader during gun season when I use to go out then. I know deer aren't supposed to the the hunters orange - it drives me nuts so I don't hunt gun season anymore. I don't understand what your state is doing :frusty:

Read through this, especially the fine print.

Sorry, click on hunting license and read the "note" at the bottom of resident licenses.

I'm concluding the same as Bullfiddle. You need both. Read the non-resident, archery and "all game" sections.

It would be the same in Maine. If I bought a non res archery license, I would also need a big game license to use that archery license in the regular gun season.

OK, after re-reading your link I think I agree with you, the last paragraph says you can and no special permit is needed. Sorry, it's late. :noidea:

the way it is boys as i have understood for years, and i am a mississippi boy,is that even though you are BOW hunting during gun season you need to have an archery license to hunt in gun season.that is why i buy a sportsman license.it includes archery, primitive weapon, rifle, small game, and fishing.

Ohio you can hunt with a bow all season with just the hunting license and a valid either sex deer tag. Now this year they made special tags for bow hunters that allowed you to take 2 extra does, but they had to be used before gun season came in.

I think you should have had a lawyer...

In Missouri I believe the rules state you can hunt with a bow during rifle season as long as you have a valid rifle tag & you wear hunter orange, during muzzleloading season you only need your archery tag (although I do wear orange to & from my stand).

i'm in louisiana and my interpretation of our rules are if you are going to deer hunt you have to have a big game tag. if you are going to hunt primative firearms you have to have that tag on top of the big game tag. same for archery. so if you hunt all three you have to have tags for all 3, big game, priative, and archery. we can bow hunt all year, and primative firearm in gun season but you still have to have the tags. now thats for us here in the boot. i've never looked at a mississippi booklet.

Here in Texas you don't need an archery stamp unless you are hunting in the archery only season. Not that it helps you, but that is why I just buy a "Super Combo" so if it walks or flies, I can hunt it

thanks for the replies, i only bow hunt and i just can't hunt during the archery season down here, its way too hot! so i just bow hunt during the rifle season.

Archery/Primitive Weapon Permit (must be bought in addition to All Game Hunting or 7-Day All Game Hunting, or General Crossbow when hunting during special seasons).

not to beat a dead horse but this was copied straight from the non-resident portion of the regulations. DURING SPECIAL SEASONS. O well, a lawyer would have cost me alot more than the fine. i will call the wildlife commission next week to find out for sure.

thanks again :noidea:

It sounds to me like many states need to be more like Ohio, we only need a deer tag, and your regular hunting liscense. No stamps, no primitive permits, no gun permits, nothing but those two items. The only changes to archery are durring any of the statewide gun seasons or muzzleloading, you must wear hunter orange and you can only hunt from sunrise to sunset. Durring regular archery season you are allowed 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. It doesn't make sense that you can shoot something with a bullet that may travel for miles, but in order to shoot 100 yds max you need special permits. butthis also goes for crossbow use. Ohio you can use crossbow all season.
Until PSE has came up with the Tac 15 crossbows have been less advanced than compounds. I am not handicapped, but I love hunting and for 3 years could not pull back my bow. Crossbow was my only option to get in the woods before all the lunes did with their guns that they just dug out of the closet for the first time since last season.

From your link:

Nothing contained herein shall be contrued as prohibiting the use of a primitive firearm, with or without telescopic sights, or a bow and arrow, for deer during the regular open gun season(s) for deer, or as a requirement for having the seperate primitive firearms license at any time except during the special open season for primitive weapons.

From MDWFP:

All Game Hunting (Ages 19 and over - does not include Archery/Primitive Weapon, General Crossbow, Spring or Fall Turkey permits, or WMA User Permit)

Archery/Primitive Weapon Permit (must be bought in addition to All Game Hunting or 7-Day All Game Hunting, or General Crossbow when hunting during special seasons)

Sounds to me like that CPO took you to the cleaners. Call the regional office and complain. If they are going to be in the job and try to enforce the laws, they should at least know what they are supposed to be enforcing.

I would have gotten a Lawyer. Now you have a "hunting without a license" charge on your record, and that don't look good if for some reason you would have problems in the future.

In Michigan AKA land of the MOLE

You can hunt with a bow the entire length of deer season as long as you wear orange during the gun and Muzzleloader seasons. Our tags go both ways:tape:
