The further out you have the pins from your face the more accurate they are and the more likely it will be to have multiple pins that are usable (ex: 20 - 30 - 35 - 40 - 45...) instead of 20 - 30 - 40.

That said unless your hunting something extremly small at long yardages you won't see any real improvement over a short mount and a longer one.
