Went out last Sat. for the first time in actuall darkness. Marked thr trail to my blind with white cloth strips so with my light I could find my way. Got to the stand and went around releasing the scent bombs with natural attration still mostly dark.
I get into the blind and try and adjust to the darkness and nock an arrow. I wasnt there 5 minutes when straight ahead, at exactly 10 yards, I see this black shape and I though, that droup of stumps are farther down the trail. Then I think, oh no!
I shine my minimag at it, and looking in my direction are two bright orange eyes.
BEAR!
It moved about 25 yards to my right. Now Im praying and shaking like a leaf. It turns around and goes right back to the spot it was at, stands up for a split second and whoofs, is the only way I can describe the sound it made. Then it turns and goes left of me aprox. 20- 30 yards away. Then, I lost site of it. Im still shaking and praying, waited about 20 mins. and took off for home. Ruined my first day of bowhunting in 10 years for me. I left my quiver and other stuff until later and came back for them in the pm with my gun. Had two beers before 7:30 am to calm me dow.
Can you believe the chances of this happening? I dont know if Ill go back to the blind until rifle season.

I understand the fear you felt. I got sick in the woods 2 weeks ago at 4:30am and was harrassed by some coyots.
Get one of these and you will feel better.

Just an Idea.

Can you explain a little bit how these work???

It's a pressure activated shot gun shell on a stick.
The big bad bear would need to be with in 4ft and up poke it hard with the stick...and bang dead bear or extreamly injured bear.
The bullet dosen't kill the gasses do killing because the shot is on contact.
Self deffence from land critters is not the intended use for these.
It was just an idea that popped into my mind after I had a pack of coys surround me while i was puking in the woods.
In my state you can not carry a fire arm while bow hunting.
This seems like a good sollution seeing as it is not a fire arm but would stop almost any animal DEAD in it's tracks.
I figure if it can kill a great white shark instantly a black bear or a mt. lion should be stopped short of your throat.
I'm not saying this is the best idea in the world, it's just my idea:decision:

I'm new her and still doing a LOT of reading but seeing as how I have first hand knowledge of the device being mentioned fealt I might as well chime in. I've been diving since 1968. I have one attached to the end of my speargun and have only used it once in all that time. It works great on sharks but I would NOT use it on a Bear.

Have you ever had a preditor at 4'? Don't even go there.

When used on a shark, you are right - the killing is accomplished by the air embolisum (sp) caused by the expanding gas. At 60' (~4 atmospheres of pressure) it provides the "kill".

On a Bear, you'd have to put it into his heart or brain and I WOULD NOT want to try that from 4'. NOR would I do that with the 12 ga. The 12 ga. is usefull u/w because of the amount of gas it produces.

(EDITED: OBTW, you would still get the embolisum into the Bear but I doubt it'd kill him on the spot. But if the bullet did not explode the heart or brain you'd have one really PO'ed Bear.)

IMHO - be prepared to use your bow and place a good shot into it the same as you would a deer.

My intended use of the Power Stick would be in very low light/no light situation where the critter has already reaveled it's intent to kill then eat me or eat while killing me.
I just think it would work better then stabing with a broadhead.

Once again I am not claiming it's the best idea, just my idea.

Best solution would be alowing hunters to carry a hand gun.
I would certianly feel alot safer doing almost anything with Glock23 on my hip.

Yes....that is another reason I got my concealed license! I have my .45 on my hip just in case. Not that I will ever run across anything (I will be really lost if I come in contact with a bear), but I feel so much more at ease knowing I have it with me!

Carry a hand gun - not for the bear but to put you out of your misery after wounding the bear with the power stick
