View Full Version : Looking for a new set of bino's
BuckeyeRed 12-10-2009, 09:33 PM Interested in the Leupold Gold Ring and the Vortex Razor. I've been happy w/ every Leupold purchase I've made and really like the Gold Ring. I've never actually looked thru a set of Vortex's before but they seem to have alot of fans and the Razor's get mentioned alot.
Looking for some feedback from anyone who's looked thru both. I realize that Vortex sponsors alot of shooters and I hope that won't skew any responses.
Is the Vortex Razor in the same class as the Leupold Gold Ring?
Thanks for the input.

Honestly yes they are. Leupold makes a good bino. Actually the Binos I used before going to Vortex. Im currently using the Vipers 15X50 and really like them because there lighter than the Razors.

Don't the Vipers have less glass performance than the Razors?

But honestly I could not see that big of difference. Razor weighed more. Dont get me wrong those that own the Razor love them.

I love my alpens 8.5x50
JDX-- 12-11-2009, 10:42 PM Vortex binos are awesome the Razors are as clear as it can get with the Vipers being a great choice also. The nice thing about Vortex is the price is right and the folks backing you up when something goes wrong be it dropping them on the concrete or from a tree stand to just plain having an accident .The VIP warranty is second to none – just a great company taking care of you and your glass.
I use mine dang near everyday and I have looked thru a lot of glass, I am very pleased with the performance that I have with my Vortex glass and as stated their customer service is awesome

J.A.G. 12-11-2009, 11:38 PM i think they both are going to be real close.. both very good.
The thing with Vortex is the warranty and customer service.. it can't be beat.
I own the razors. They are a bit on the heavy side compared to the Steiners I used to use but the glass difference, the way they are constructed is second to none. The Razors are jus awesome. Get you a set and you will not be dissappointed.

okarcher 12-12-2009, 10:19 AM I've looked through both and couldn't tell any difference. But the warranty and customer service with vortex is the best is why I went with Vortex:peace:
SandSquid 12-12-2009, 09:45 PM VortexTim is a swell guy and an active participant on this and many other boards, hosts benefit shoots, donates to children & charities, etc. I don't recall Leupold doing any of that.... but I could be wrong about Leupold "giving back".

Patsplace 12-21-2009, 02:22 AM The Razor Glass and the Viper Glass is exactly the same, right eye final focus
is different on the Viper and the Viper weighs 6 oz. less and in the final analysis, costs about $100 less with the current rebate on the Razors.
I have the Razors and think the sun rises and sets on them. If I was to buy another pair of bins, it would be another Razor 8X42. After 50-55 your eyes cannot use the light gathering of the 8X50, which are also a bunch heavier. The difference in weight between the Razor and the Viper was 6 oz. and I think that is all in armor and I kind of like the armor when I'm clunking them off a quad, stand, tree, ladder or what have you.

MeanV2 12-21-2009, 09:00 AM I have owned Leupold, and Steiner glasses. They both are quality optics. I currently use a set of 10X32 Katmai Leupolds, and they are a great Whitetail glass.
When I hunt Mule Deer out west I always wish I had a little more power, and have been looking hard at the Vortex Viper 15X50's. I hear great things about Viper but just cautious about the 15 power. Afraid it might be too much. DB do you find your 15X Vipers are hard to hold still? Anyone else that has used 15X binos feel free to chime in.:biggrin1:

They have been the best glasses I have ever used. I used for 3d all last year and they did help on dark targets. I do like the lighter weight as well. Im sure hard on binos as well, always dropping them while 3ding. Have Tim at Vortex show them to you at the trade show. You have to get them still but it hasnt been a promblem for me. My eyes are getting worse all the time. Good news with the lost weightmy diebetes is getting better and its helping my eyesight. IBO changed there bino rule and now there legal for IBO as well.

MeanV2 12-21-2009, 10:19 AM My eyes also are getting worse all the time. I think with me it's just age:D I'm glad you are getting a handle on the Diabetes DB. Good for you!!
I have a friend that has a lot of trouble with his Diabetes, and if he doesn't get a handle on it soon I'm afraid his quality of life, and ability to continue to hunt is going to suffer Greatly!
Anyone else has any feedback on using 15 power binos to glass for Mulies out west. I wanna hear it.

BuckeyeRed 12-21-2009, 11:32 AM Went to Cabela's the other day and made the mistake of looking thru the Swarovskis  . Now my delemma is the EL 8.5x42 or SLC 7x42. I was not a fan of the ergonomics or the eye cups on the Leupold GR 8x42 when compared to the Swarovski's.
The debate for me is I really like the big exit pupil size, big fov, and forgiveness of the slc 7x42's. And they are probably the only magnification I'll need hunting here in the Illinois woods.
The EL 8.5x42's feel the best in hand and think it's the best multipurpose compromise between 8x and 10x. I think the slight added power increase would be nice for glassing hillsides in Idaho and still be low enough in the woods. The exit pupil is still a good size, fov is good, just not sure if the 8.5x is needed..:noidea:
