This will be my second turkey season. From threads I've seen, it seems like most folks just take the breast and leave the rest. It seems like a waste. Couldn't you use the rest for broth, soup, whatever? Or is it too much of a hassle?

I have smoked whole turkeys before.

Breast is just the best part. Really nothing wrong with just eating the breast.

I donate my buddy the feathers and everthing left to trap Yotes. Now thats putting the ole turkey to good use.

I've made a habit of using as much of each animal I harvest as possible.
Just never made sense to me to take certain parts and leave the rest. My
exception is frogs - just never found any use for anything other than the
legs :biggrin1:

We skin whole take out innards and deep fry bird whole.

Just not worth the fuss to most turkey hunters I know. You fillet out the breasts and you've removed the vast majority of good meat from any WILD turkey. It's not like you have the big over-sized drumsticks like you get from a domestic bird. After that... what else is there.... maybe a sandwich size pile of scraps?

I take the tail feathers and get them mounted along with the beard and maybe the feet if the spurs are big enough.

Wing feathers are given to a friend of mine who uses them for arrow fletching.

The breast goes into the freezer for thanksgiving and the rest goes to the coyote bait barrel.

Hey Gator, I had to laugh when I read your post as to "when you shoot
a deer, do you"

Pickled tongue is good, a lot of work for not much return due to it's size -
best to use beef or bison.
Fried liver - you bet ya, it's better than beef liver and I love beef liver.
kidneys - you've got me here. My grand dad ate kidney's, I never gave
them a try. Like most things though, you never know until you do it.
heart - yep, picklet or fried.

brains - use these for doing brain tanning of the hide. We pretty much use
everything from the animal, see we do historical reenacting. Did you know
you can get at least $13.00 a square foot for brain tan ? Figure it up my
friend, you may want to check out the library and try your hand at it.
Antlers and bones are used for many items - so are feather's from your
bird.

I'm not trying to bust your chops Gator, just trying to open your eyes -
there's a lot of waste in todays world :wave:

Im not to sure what you mean by i blew it? my point is just use the hole bird. we kill 2 to 3 birds a year save 1 for turkey day cook the others on the grill with no meat wast.im just saying first hand their is lots of good meat to use other than the breast .as for the deer and elk we kill yes as said the brain the tongue the kidneys can be used so i guess i wast that stuff ok .but we do tan the hids or sell the capes . their will be wast but i think keep it to a minimum thats all im trying to say.
