After watching my brother hunt a few times, I'm trying to take up archery. I've already tried a recurve, and am alright with it, but want to use compounds. If you want to help, please remember while editing this that I'm 13 and 5' 8.5" :)
This is my list, if you know of any more efficient items, less costly duplicates, or other essentials, it would be much appreciated if you'd post here and notify me. My goal is to get this below or closer to $800-$900.
Get some decent binos. You won't believe how much more you can see using them. Especially in low light.

Do you think a Nikon 8x40 ($68.89) set of bino's is good?
Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. I can give you my opinion, but archery is a greatly custom sport. Everyone's wants, needs, and likes are different. All you can do is test stuff out, touch as much stuff as you can.
Core
Bow) Parker BuckHunter Compound Bow & Outfitter Package ($369.95)
Bow Case) Anything (</=$99.99)
I use a Plano case $24.99 got it on sale for $19.99
Quiver) Anything (</= $19.99)
What kind of quiver? I use a hip quiver (Kodiak) it was around $20, Bow mnt. quivers can be cheaper
Arrows) 28" Carbon Arrows (x3) ($8.97)
Broadheads) Woodsman Broadheads 150gr Screw-In 6-Pack ($27.99)
Armguard) Anything (</= $19.99)
You can get arm guards for under $10 depends on your preference, Once you've been shooting a while you may not even use it.
Deer Grunt Call) Anything (</=$19.99)
This time of year Dick's clears out their inventory so alot of their calls are dirt cheap, But selection sucks. Primos is a good call.
Mechanical Release) Anything (</=$19.99)
Don't "chince" on your release. You will enjoy shooting more with a good one. Tru-Ball makes some good ones in the $20-$60 range

Shirt) UnderArmor Brushed ColdGear Mock (Mossy Oak Coloring-- Size LG) ($59.99)

Thank you!
The Nikon 440 rangefinder has an 8X lens. Alot of times I won't bring my bino's in the feild to hunt. I use them mainly to scout.

Do I need urine/drags or decoys? What about antlers?
And brokenarrow, when you said that the rangefinder has 8x lens, do you mean I don't need another set of bino's?
Thanks again!

I carry a rattle bag, it cost like $10. A 3 pack of Tink's scent bombs is like $6. Scents can go from $5-$50. I like Tink's 69. I don't use a drag. Scent control can get expensive it depending on the system you use(hunter spec., Dead Down Wind...). I don't use decoys but I have friends that do with mixed results... That's something you can add later.
As far as bino's, it pays to have a good set for scouting or if you hunt wide open areas. But if you hunt heavy cover, use your rangefinder. It's 1 less thing to carry. I also bought a spotting scope for scouting now I really only use my bino's for 3D.

Looking at the bow, it has a sling on it so you wont need that the sight should be fine to start with you can always upgrade...it also looks like it comes w/ a wisker biscuit(which is the finest hunting rest ever made IMHO)
so I would say just a stabilizer and maybe some limbsavers (I didn't see them on the bow but I did see string leeches)
I was also gonna say something about those broadheads but I see someone else did..

What about arrows????? You said $8.97 that's $50@ 1/2 doz.
What brand? I shoot CX's, the CX Maximas are a real nice arrow too.
Also, I don't think I made the arrow prices clear. The Gander Mountain around here sells carbon arrows for $2.99 apiece. I'm buying 3, so it comes to $8.97. Are these good, or should I switch to those maximas? Do you think I need more? I can go up to 1/2 dozen.
Also, Having an aerosol can of scent-retardant on hand is a good idea as well, right? And is it better to have buck scents or doe scents, or should I get both? Is Gel better, that scent bomb thing better, or urine/estrous?

I dont think you should consentrate so much on getting into scents right now....I dont know how long your season is but I always like to buy scents fresh each year if possible.....sometimes I may not use any.....more important is to get your bow and get shooting.....you can get these other items in dribs and drabs....like I have.....over the years I have bought things here and there....
I dont think you can buy everything you will need....there is always something to buy.....
As far as arrows go I never buy cheap arrows anymore....just not worth the money you may save....if its just to get shooting then fine....but you will upgrade eventallly....

Again I'm forced to say Bowman is right:tape:
Get your bow (core set up), arrows and a case and start shooting. the rest takes time to see what you really need.
You'll go to the poor house trying to buy the whole shoot'n match and you still won't have everything you need or want (really).

Here is what I would start out with. This would be my list of "essentials". You have a lot of stuff that should be on the "nice to have, but not needed" list. :biggrin1:
Core
Bow) Parker BuckHunter Compound Bow & Outfitter Package ($369.95)
Bow Case Plano Hardcase. $25-$30 at Basspro
Quiver) comes with bow package
Arrows) hard to get just 3 arrows, you should be able to find a half dozen ready to use on Ebay for $30-$40.
Broadheads) Woodsman Broadheads 150gr Screw-In 6-Pack ($27.99)150g is very heavy, try 100s or 125s
Armguard) good form and the right draw length and you won't need this
Deer Grunt Call) go to walmart tomorrow. most of their deer calls are going on sale. get a grunt tube and a doe can call. I can't get a deer to answere to either, but it doesnt hurt to try. Anything (</=$19.99)
Mechanical Release) Get a good one. I use this one to hunt with... http://www.lancasterarchery.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=48_219&products_id=953
I prefer it over a wrist strap. Try them both and see what you like
[549.95]
Clothing
I wear US Military issue pants, a long sleeved camo shirt I picked up at Walmart for $10 and a Leafy turkey vest from BassPro. $70 for all.
Shoes cant beat good boots, dont skimp here...
Hiking/Mountain Boots) Cabela's Silent Stalk GORE-TEX/SCENT-LOK Fabric Boots ($99.95)
[$170]
Accessories
Tree Stand) Lone Wolf Alpha Assault ($189.99)
Optics) Nikon 440 ProStaff 8x20 Rangefinder not an essential, pace the yardages to trees from your stand and mark them with Tinks scent bombs that you can get at Walmart. Unless you are hunting the western plains that is.

you might also be able to pick up a few new/used items on some of the forum Classifieds......you may be able to save even a little more.....
as far as the release.....for a beginner I would suggest staying w/ a wrist strap style at first.....you wont be fumbleingaround in the dark in your stand for it.....it will be around your wrist before you leave the house or truck.....velcro is noisy but less exspensive than a buckle strap.....

I still live with my family, so I plan on getting my Core section over the next year or so, and then slowly accumulating the rest of the stuff on this list(By the end of 3 years, which happens to be 3 birthdays, and 3 sections).
I Already have a target from my recurve bow, but lost all my arrows (All 3 of 'em. Yeah, I'm gooood...)
Anyways, yeah, I just want to start shooting. I plan on getting better arrows before I start hunting. My mom says if I can stay devoted to archery, and show some skill with the bow, then she'll consider letting me get a bow that's over $100... I told her that there was only one bow I'd even consider buying that was under $100. Guess what we ended up getting? XD
EDIT: Thanks, jcmorgan, I think I'm going to get 6 then. Sorry, I thought I hit reply a few hours ago >.> I'm going to stick with a strap release, sorry >.> and I did edit to 125gr broadheads... Also, I can't measure anything, so I need a rangefinder. Didn't realize that the package came with a quiver, thanks for pointing that out! Anyways, I'm getting tired and school's tomorrow *Groan* SO! I need to get to bed. I'll be up at 4:00 AM though, so I hope to see some posts!
Anyways, Thanks again! Still looking to improve this list!

Assuming compounds work the same way as recurves in regards to draw lengths, 26-28"
Compounds let you have double your normal draw weight, right?
In that case, 40-50#

Yeah, I've been using 28" Arrows at the recommendation of a Gander Mountain guy that has supposedly used a bow for 15 years... He pulled out this official-looking stick and told me to act like I was holding a bow at full draw. Told me I could use an arrow at 28", but I tried a 26" and found that that was possible too.

Hey, I just went to huntersfriend.com, and they have an awesome deal (http://www.huntersfriend.com/2006-Parker-Buckhunter/Buck-Hunter-Compound-Bow-Package.htm) on the bow I want. It seems to cover everything I need, and It looks like a pretty good price, too.
Can Anyone confirm whether this is a better set, or my current set is better? If this one is better, is huntersfriend.com a reliable site? Has anyone bought from there? Was there anything wrong with they way they shipped/packed it (Crud on the bow, a sliver cut off the case, etc.)?
Thanks and sorry for the Double Post!

please understand that the post you are about to read is only to help you and not discourage you.....
that does not mean that the arrows are right for the bow you will be using.....they have to be tuned to your setup you cant just pick up 28 inch arrows and expect to be consitant.....you might find 28 inch arrows that are way to stiff for your setup and will fly erraticly out of your bow.....you will quickly get discusted w/your equipment and want to move on thinking you are not any good at archery.....you could also end up w/arrows to weak or light for your set up and end up hurting your self........In my opinion buying your first bow or any bow for that matter over the web untill you know a little something about archery and how things in archery work is a VERY BAD IDEA.....I just reread and relized that I think you said you were 13.....who is going to tune up this bow and make sure things stay in time afetr the first few hundred shots or so????
I have another question...will someone be able to help you get this bowadjusted for you....do you know how to move a kisser button...peep sight.....adjust your sights.....
I would hate to see you hate archery after a week and never want to do it again.....
again this was not ment as a post to discourage you from archery but to maybe make you think about things that I wish someone had mentioned to me.....

Okay, first off, I am 13, but I have a 40-year-old brother that's been bow-hunting for half a decade, and used a rifle for... I seriously don't know how long, but it was a while before bow-hunting.
Anyways, I CAN'T hate archery. Even if those arrows are wrong, I love them for my recurve. Hunting, I'm kind of iffy on. Target Archery, I love. My brother has already said that when I start, he will help me adjust/fine-tune everything, teach me the basics, and then take me hunting the first couple times.
As for the bow, I assumed that it was a pretty good one, but if you have a better one that is at the same or a lower price, that would be great.
Yeah, the gander mt. guy said his dad taught an archery class, and then proceeded to spout useless jargon. Not sure if I mentioned that. Also, I'm not planning on buying online, unless I have to. I'd rather find a deal online, and then take it in to a store that will match/beat it for the same bow.

finding a good deal online is great...taking that deal to a dealer and saying meet or beat is a bad idea.....
people try to do this to me at work all the time....
this is what I say.....go back to the box store and buy it, but who is going to fix it when it breaks....these are the things I will do for you....including teach you how to use the item saftly so you dont hurt youself....
ITS ALL ABOUT THE SERVICE.....this is why you pay more for stuff at pro/specialty shops....the service after the sale.....

Just a suggestion but I think you MAY be going a tad bit overboard here bud...
You don't need to start out with the full setup, especially if its your first year.
You need at least 6 arrows, I would suggest a dozen. You will break arrows. I gurantee it.
I would spend as much money as possible on the bow you are looking to get, make sure it is adjustable as you are not done growing yet. I would suggest 50 - 60 pound limbs. You will outgrow and tear clothes... your bow you can use for decades.
Shop the bargain cave at cabelas and year end sales! you'll get everything for a lot less.
Steam whatever you can from you uncle and other hunters to save money initally. No sense in dropping 60 bux on a piece of underarmor when it won't fit you next year.

So, you're saying that I should take off under armor and borrow it from my brother, and add more arrows?
My brother has a decent jacket, but no pants or anything like that, that'll fit me. Should I just find regular camo clothes and buy scent retardant aerosol?
Until I get a reply, I'm going to leave under-armour on.

What letoff percentage should I have, 65% or 80%?
That is more on the lines of personal preference. I like 65% because I seem to hold a little steadier but went with 80% on my XT. Thinking of drawing down on an animal and having to wait longer for the shot. Only a difference of about 9# if you are drawing 60# but after holding for a minute or two that will add up. Best bet shoot both and see which one you prefer. Good luck:peace:

I believe some bow manufacturers allow you to change letoff with modules or something but when you change this it also changes your draw length which you have to account for. Mathews though you will have to purchase a different cam I believe. I hope this helps you out. Anyone correct me please if I am wrong.

you may think i sound crazy, but i wouldnt recommend buying cover scents or attractant scents for a while. too many beginners jump into the scent free frenzy and buy scent blocker clothes, and all kinds of cover scents, then they go out hunting thinking they can hunt anywhere under any wind conditions...well, i hate to tell you, but you will never be 100% scent free.
I still dont use very much scent control, just a light spray down of scent killer, and im usually lucky enough to kill a nice buck. You just have to use your head when planning your hunts. This is the most ignored part of hunting in my opinion. NEVER try to hunt a stand with the wrong wind. save it for another day when the wind is right. Granted, you cant always predict which way the deer will come from, but usually you have a good idea.
Anyway, good luck with your new hobby!

WOW i just read this entire thread...... all i got to say is this youngster is on his game with this archery thing.....Now hears my .02. I would get the bow set up and get to shooting, and get the proper arrows. it takes years and years to hone hunting skills!! Ive been a hunter for over 15 years, and im still learning!!! and a good while to become a great archer as well, Its great to have all this planned out, the list of stuff you want over the next few years, Its great to be prepared. I would start with the archey equip first, get some cheaper camo, say from walmart, some decent hunting boots, and go for it!! If your hunting with someone thats been doing it for a while, and your related to them, they pry will share some things, like cover sent, their knife, or maybe a tree stand. They might even have some old cammo they dont use anymore, and give it to you????? Start at the bottom, you will find that you get everything you need. o and you will pry never ever have everything you want or all the things you think you need!! the things on your list are all great to have, but not needed to go and take a deer!! wish you luck!!!!

Dude I can rellay relate to what you are going thru, Hi all, as I am a new guy also, first post, what I did is about six months ago,I started on my quest of bow hunting, the first thing I did was read, and I mean read, I read every post on several bow site's, that was a great and I mean a great way to learn, as most of the million questions I had , there were the answers, usually more than once, lol !! , Then I found a couple of archery shops around my area and went and started looking and touching:biggrin1: , Then I decide on what my budget was:amen: , Then I found a awesome used bow, one year old Hoyt Uraltra Tech, for $350.00, and about $150.00 for the rest, sights etc.... the bow is awesome and will out shoot me anyday: It is pure joy to shoot and a geat first bow, I then called and old friend and told him about the new obession, and told him I was in the market for a climbing stand, so happens he had a spare summit in his garage and did I have anything I would like to swap for it, well I offered him 1953 russian sks, or a barely used fender guitar with amp, he jump on the guitar, and the rest is history, just got back from the woods, now I havent gotton anything yet but it will come with time and pataince, this board is wealth of fine people and information, so set back and do some reading, remember we learn twice as much by listening {reading}as talking, and ninety percent by doing and failing, learn form your mistakes and have fun good luck on your quest :welcome: yak

It seems I forgot to mention that my birthday is on June 25th, which is also the day that I hope to get my Bow Package.
I haven't shot in a while. I shot my arrows (all 3 of them, the $4 apiece kind) into the woods, and my dad told me that he'd go out with me and buy some more, and kept telling me that it wasn't a good time whenever I brought it up, and it became a non-topic. I asked my mom about it (I didn't say that I lost my arrows, 'cause my dad said that he'd ask my mom about it, who was out of town at the time.), and she said that she wouldn't buy anything archery-related until I get outside and shoot. "End of subject."
Soooo... I need to get my dad over to Gander Mt. I also need to get the Orange-and-yellow fletching instead of the green-and-brown kind  They were impossible to see when they were parallel to the ground.
Today's friday, so my dad shouldn't have anything planned.

An update! I just bought 3 Beman ICS Hunter (500) Arrows (w/ field points and fletching) for $6 each :)
So, that just leaves the bow... Speaking of which, I made a HUGE mistake.
The Parker BuckHunter is $479.99 at HuntersFriend.com. What I'm looking at is the PSE DeerHunter, which is $350.
Can anyone quote me a price if I were to take off the PSE Mustang Shoot-Thru Rest and replace it with a Whisker Biscuit? Which brings me to another point-- What's the big difference with the Original, Drop-Tine, and Deluxe Whisker Biscuits by Carolina Archery? I didn't see it...
Also, my brother introduced me to different sights... Now I need to know whether I should use a 1- or 3-pin sight, and whether a pendulum sight is any good. He (Gene, incase I reference him as that later on) uses a pendulum sight and a Whisker Biscuit. He's also a PSE Die-Hard. His old bow was a Mathews, and he's offered it to me. I'm not sure what he'd give me with it, but I'm prepared to take him up on it. Whadya think?

Base
I don't think I really need this section, until I get a bit older. Right now, A decent pair of loose-fit pants and a camo shirt will get it done.

3 posts in a row for me...
I was wondering, is Carolina Archery the only one that makes whisker biscuits?
Also, is a whisker biscuit any more desirable for a beginner than the PSE Mustang Shoot-Thru they include?
Or should I just stick with the Mustang Shoot-Thru Rest they have in the package?

Carolina is the only wisker biscuit...There is a "wisper disc"?? or something like that it's similar but not bristles...Just start with what comes on the bow...Get some x's under your belt and go from there. IMHO.

My older brother and I were (of all things under the sun to be doing on a SATURDAY) lamp shopping for his house a few weeks ago, and we talked about the PSE DeerHunter that I was looking at. He told me that I could get everything I'd need on eBay for that same price or cheaper. On the ride home, he mentioned that he was looking at a new bow (PSE, I think), and that he might, just maybe, be able to part with his Mathews. He said that I'd need to readjust it, but it'd have a pendulum sight, a rest, and a few things I can't remember. Should I take him up on it, or stick to my plan and beg my parents with all my thirteen years?
Also, BOWMAN, is it safe to ask how you killed [one and a] half of an animal?
One last thing. ladyarcher, do you have a website set up for your store?
