Question Please Help: '08 bow short list not short enough

    Hi all,

First, I haven't bow hunte for quite some time, so I'm practically newbie getting back into archery. I need a 31" draw, 50 to 60# pull and I intend to use the bow mostly for 3D (hunter class with fixed pins and release). I'm visually impaired in my right eye, so I shoot left handed and want a bit more speed if I don't have to give up too much foregiveness (helps with the distance misjudging).

That said, I've been told I should avoid very harsh cams so I'm not looking for an absolute speed demon. I'm not in a position to shoot many bows as there simply aren't many in the area...only 1 had anything I could shoot left handed, and shooting a bow right handed seems an apples to oranges scenario in my case (feels all wrong and I can't see what I"m shooting at).

I've shot a couple of bows (all I could find locally) and really like the gentle feel of a parallel limb bow. Also, I like their look. As for grips, I think I like a more slim grip, but a bit thicker grip isn't a deal breaker.

I'm in Brisbane, Australia, so bow access is limited and every bow on my list is priced from $1100 to $1250....so price difference isn't much of a concern (once you get to that price). Please provide advise on the following (other than typical brand name wars, please):

    Bowtech 101st Airborne
    Bowtech Commander
    Elite Xtreme XL
    Hoyt Katera XL
Mathews Drenalin LD (I shot one of these. It's why want parallel limbs)
    PSE Dream Season HF
    PSE Long Draw HF

Thanks and hopefully the long post helps you help me without wearing you out.

havent shot all of those on your list, i have shot the bowtechs, i own a drenalin adn i shot the pse xforce the dream season and the ss. the pses seemed kind of harsh on the drawback compared to the bowtechs and the mathews. i was looking to buy a dxt when i bought my drenalin but i personally thought the drenalin was a touch more forgiving than the dxt thats just my opinion though. i have heard a lot of good things about the katera.

Only one of those I have shot is the Elite XXL. I liked it so much I ordered one for 3D myself.

It has an 8" brace height and will still shoot in the 320s with your draw. So there is your speed and forgiveness.

The new wheels used on these bows produce a very smooth draw that transition into a rock solid back wall. The one I shot was well balanced and held really well.

The grip is very comfortable and it has your parallel limbs.....

Definitely meets your criteria. Good luck with whatever you decide....

Based on your criteria in your post, I can highly recommend the Commander.

Your request for smooth draw elimates the airborne, the pse's and the elite.
Your request for small grip elimates the DLD unless you plan to change it.

That leaves the Katera XL and the Commander. Of these two my preference would be the Commander. Based on the sales for this year already, our customers agree with the Commader.

Don't call me a blowie cuz I own a bowtech, hoyt ultra elite and mathews apex 7.

I assume that's the Elite I shot when I was at Justin's; if so I agree it's a good one. The transition into the valley is a little different than I'm used to and it does have a very solid wall; liked it much better than the Firecat draw cycle for example. It would take some getting used to for me but I'd definitely put it on your consideration list.

The one you shot was an '07 Synergy I believe. The '08's are completley differnt and much smoother.

Uh oh........so this would make a pretty nice 3D/Hunting rig I'm guessing with good speed? Should I start saving my pennies? The specs look pretty good.

Actually I have not. I am basing my opinion on other elites I have drawn with binary style cams. JCmorgan could be right here.

You shocked me with that one Chris... The '07 was a bit harsh, but these '08s are nice. I was thinking those Bowtechs must be single cam smooth to knock the XXL right off the list.....

The Commander is a do-it-yourself shooters dream machine. Tune it anywhere without a bow press.. With your draw length, speed won't be a problem and the heavier weight of the Commander will add stability to your aim.

    Default Wow!

Amazing! I catch a few hours of sleep and already getting some really good feedback. Thanks a ton guys. I really appreciate the insight.

Hopefully after a couple of days my decision will be clearly narrowed down to 2 or 3. I intend to put forth some serious effort to try the top 3.

    Thanks again.

on your list I like the Katera xl. I agree the PSE's will be a bit harsh. I personally do not like the drenalin. the combo of the grip and ATA and BH just doesn't sit well with me. don't overlook the Martin line also. The Sceptor 4, Mystic, Slayer all great 3d/field bows. Oh let me add...that at your DL I would stay with longer ATA bows 38" and up. You might find the string angle fits you better.
