    Default 10-2-2008 AM 8 Point!

I thought I would share my morning success with everyone...

It was a great morning to go out and hunt! I moved my climber stand last night (my brother and I got up at midnight, went scent proof and moved the stand based on deer movement on that opening evening)

2 deer came in a bit after sun-up. A doe and a 6 point. They came in from my right and milled around eating acorns. I tried to stand to shoot, but the moment I tried to stand, they heard my clothing rustle (it was dead silent) and they lept off about 30 yards and then circled around behind me. The buck then wheezed and carried on for about 5 minutes!

About an hour later, I heard a twig snap behind me and to my right. I looked over my shoulder to see a buck making its way along the fenceline that runs behind my stand. The fence runs about 5 yards behind me and the buck was about 15 yards to my right. As he passed behind me, I picked up my bow and turned to my left for the shot. I had to wait for him to pass by the small tree in my shooting lane before I could get the shot.

He was quartering away pretty hard to I had to shoot just behind his back rib so that the arrow would carry up into the chest cavity. I pulled the trigger on my release and SNAP! The arrow hit him.

I watched him as he lept off about 10 yards and started looking around. I could see my arrow still stuck in him, but due to the angle, it looked like my FOB was sticking out from his rear hips. I was REALLY worried that I gut-shot him or hit him wrong. I practice a lot and was sick with myself thinking that I made a bad shot. I grabbed another arrow in case he came a little closer but while I nocked it, he started running. My last sight of him was as he bumped into a small tree in the feild.

I called my brother who has been hunting with me (he was in MY stand and I was hunting elsewhere because he can't shoot as far with his setup) and he came over. We started looking for blood where I had shot at the deer. Nothing. I was going to puke. I had seen the arrow in the deer and KNEW that I had hit it, so I went over where I had last saw the deer and kept looking for blood.

Then my brother picked up a small leaf and handed it to me, it had the smallest drop of blood I had ever seen! I told him "Oh, great. This'll be a hellish tracking job"

Then he told me "I don't think so" and pointed. "Blood!" he said.

It looked like someone had killed a family in the woods. Blood EVERYWHERE. 10 yards from that spot, we found him piled up. I used the 2 blade Rage broadheads and they trashed both lungs and everything else in the chest cavity pretty good. It was like soup when I dressed him out. He was a VERY healthy and fat deer. His belly was HUGE. No CWD here!

My first 8 point. First buck with a Bow. First deer with a Bow in 7 years!

    I'm estatic!

I hope everyone can get out and enjoy this week like I was able to!

    PS - Yes, it's tagged.

CONGRATS.........nice deer. I don't care what anyone says. If you kill a whitetail deer with a bow it is truely a trophy. Keep it up

One thing though..............turn your bow over.

    Congrats on the buck!

Just curious, for your area there in MI, is that a yearling buck or a 2 1/2 year old? Or are most yearling only spikes and 2x2's?

    Default Age..

The processor said that he thought it looked like a 2.5. He said that it was VERY large in the body for a 2.5. Huge body, smaller neck/rack.

(I couldn't turn my bow over or the arrows would dig into the ground Nice catch tho!)

Thanks for all the great responses and support.

Good luck to everyone out there! Good luck and be safe!
