Default Last day, last minute success......

Today would be the last day I would be able to bow hunt for 2008.....

I had an appointment at 10:00 (some buddies and I needed to check our rifles for zero)......and I had a Dr. appointment at 1:15.....

So I wanted to be out of the woods and on my way at 9:30.....

I got up in plenty of time this morning and was able to take my time, getting to my spot and in my stand......

was to be 25deg at daybreak, so I had layered pretty heavy.....only problem is the weather guy was WRONG AGAIN.....it never even got down to 35.....was about 38deg.......BUT I didnt get cold....

6:00 arrive and start heading in

6:15 I get my climber into position, with scent wicks out

6:16 first deer (doe) appears and almost immediatly a buck shows up and stands in one of my shooting lanes at 50yrds, and stays there for around 10 minutes

6:30 first 2 deer move out

7:15 another doe appears and wonders around at 45-50 yrds.....I grunt at her and she approaches but then wonders off

7:30 I grunt and she reappears and hangs around within 100 yards for about 20 minutes, finally wondering off to places unseen

7:50-8:45 a few tree rats played tag here and there

8:50 I take a look at my watch and relize its 10 minutes till I call it a season

I dont even get through saying it to myself and I hear a deer running in the laurel behind me.....so I stand up and start looking......here it comes its a doe....it bolts out of the cover and right back in about 30 yards from where she came out.....I then hear a tremendous grunt.....I am thinking at this point I am getting ready to see THE TANK BUCK......well a second deer comes out and heads my way....hops over the stone wall and stands 5 feet from the tree I am in and watches back in the thick stuff....and hear comes the grunting buck, he is going crazy!!!!.....so I prepare for a shot on this giant.....well out he comes and I have never been so disapointed, ITS A SPIKE ....well he chases the 1st doe, up into the laurel again......this other doe, gave him the slip, and starts milling around.....I couldnt get a handle on how big she was, but decided that if she presented a PERFECT shot I would take her.....

there is a stump that is rotted about 10 yards from my tree, well she goes over to it and I am amazed that she doesnt relize I am there (must have been the latex gloves )......her head goes around the back ofthe stump, but she is in the wrong position.....so I wait...she steps to the right and is content on something behind me, so I look and here the spike is chasing the doe around in circles......I refocus on the doe, and come to full draw....as I do she turns even more broadside ....so I settle the pin tight to the shoulder and say to my self, "well lets see how far she goes"

8:57 the arrow connects and as it does I relize it was as perfect a shot as you could ask form.....blood immediatly starts pouring out of the hole.....I notice though that I can still see the fletchings and my thoughts imediatly goes to the the thought that "OH CRAP, THATS GONNA BE A BROKEN ARROW" I hate when that happens.......

9:15 I get all my gear together.....and take a 125yard walk to find her piled up.....

I relize I am not gonna have enough time to get her and all my stuff out and make my appointments so I leave her covered under some leaves and return at 2 to retrieve her.....I was wondering if I would regret not gutting her....

Acctually it worked out PERFECT.....It was chilly all day and she didnt have any smell at all, well except that one tiny knick where I hit the gut sack.....I picked up Mini-Bunny from school and we picked her up and dropped her off at the butcher.....(first time I have ever done this so, I will let you know how it turns out)

By the way, the .308 is hitting one hole 3 shot groups at 50 yards.....so maybe I can get one with the noise maker this weekend......

MY first deer in 2 seasons!!!
