That must have been an adrenaline rush! How long did he stick around? Did you wind up taking him down?

This is not as close as you guys, but I had a small spike buck about 15 yards from me a few years back. It just sat and stared at me, I could have easily shot it. BUT, the guy I was hunting with talked so much about getting a "trophy" that I passed on the little guy cuz I was afraid of what the "guys" would think. It was the only time I had the opportunity to get one with my bow, lesson learned ;-)

He walked right by me looking straight ahead; didn't take him. Yeah, it was a rush - I was in a blind that I made from a lean-to my daughter and I built when she was younger; had great brush cover behind me but it was wide open in front between me and him. Just froze and watched him; was in full Predator camo face mask, the whole 9 yards.

The one in the dark was actually 2 does one right behind another. it was the first or second year I hunted my place. I was behind a downed tree and was using it for a gun rest; they walked over that tree right in front of me. I could have reached out and grabbed a leg. After they went by I moved up the hill some - I've killed a handful of deer in that spot over the years, including my first handgun deer.

I had a doe running directly at me on a drive once...no doe tag..

She slammed on the brakes at about 6 feet away and stared at me for about 5 seconds before doing a 180 and heading off through the woods.

I shot my first deer ever(a spike) in a thicket...he was maybe 10 feet away from me when he stood up and looked at me. Didn't even move as I raised my shotgun. Dropped like a ton of bricks as I pulled the trigger.

Quite a few years ago had one pretty big 8 pointer come about 8 yards from me while my husband was doing a drive with our beagles. The buck stopped, listened for the beagles coming through the woods and then nonchalantly did a 90 degree turn and was going back around behind our dogs. It was awesome watching and I could hear my heartbeat banging in my ears. Just before that three does came though and were very close to me. I could almost reach out and touch one of them. They went straight past me and our dogs followed their scent rather than the bucks trail.

One year I was walking through a field and had one knock me down as it got up from the ground to run from me. Nice big doe, got a good look at her as I was hitting the ground. Since buying the land for our farm, I've seen two does at about 10 yards and one spike buck at about 4 yards. Our land, according to the neighbors, is a deer highway. I hope to keep it that way as we build our little farm.
