Thumbs down IBO State Championship, no cameras?

I went to the IBO State Championship today. I purposely went at about 1pm on Sunday so it was not real busy. I asked if I could walk part of the course and take some pictures of people shooting.

I was specifically looking for kids shooting and people having fun. They would not let me anywhere near the course. I had to stay at the practice range.

Now, don't get me wrong. I would not bother anyone and would ask their permission before photographing anyone.

The pictures were to be posted on my website along with some documentation about what 3D is and how it is "played".

If I had shown up and said I was 3D Times, would they have said the same thing?
This seemed very strange to me. Is this normal?

If I am not mistaken, this is an IBO rule. I believe that because it was a state shoot, they had to follow there rules. As far as the ASA goes, I don't remember seeing 3d times on the cousre either. I do know that they are at the shoot down. ( I may be mistaken ). I also believe that cameras are allowed on at the Pro-Am on Fri., but not on the course for Sat. or Sun.

    Thumbs up

    Hello Chris,

I would like to thank you for taking the time and effort to come out to Blackhawk Field Archers to take pictures of the IBO Illinois State Championship.

Blackhawk Field Archers has always strived and will continue to foster and promote archery. We are involved in various state organizations, Blue Skies under Illinois, local cub scouts, local handicap hunts put on at Rock Cut State Park and many others.

I couldn’t allow you on the course, but I did offer you to take pictures at the practice range of which you did. After reading the forum I find it very disheartening that it is insinuated that we would have played favorites to any news organization. We do not play any favorites and would not have, had ESPN or 3-D times shown up.

As the Tournament Chairperson of the Host Club it is our obligation to follow the rules:
Section 12 #C of the rules state:
    C. Cameras or range finding devices are not allowed on any of
the shooting ranges regardless of use.

Also please understand aside from the fact that we were attempting to follow the rules, it is a “HUGE” liability issue to just allow any one other than shooters to be walking around on the course.

Had you of called earlier in the week we could have had an officer available to escort you through the course as time permitted.

We hope to hold the State Championship again next year and welcome you back to take pictures with an escort from the club as time permits.
I hope this clears up all issues

Thanks for clearing up the issue and explaining the rules. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I do understand your position and that of the IBO. I was not aware that no media would be allowed. I will make sure to contact the IBO ahead of time in the future.

I do feel the IBO needs to have pictures of these events. Whether it's the IBO themselves or someone else, Archery needs as much promotion and recognition as it can get.

I did take two pictures on the practice range but this is not 3D. I wanted to show the actual setting, the shooters, and targets they shoot.

    Thanks again for your time.

    Default 3D shoot pictures

I'm the webmaster for Coleta Sportsmen's Club and have taken a few pictures at most of our 3D shoots including picture of kids shooting. They're posted on our website at under the archery tab. If you like, browse through them and feel free to copy and use any of them you want.

Thank you for the offer. The pictures look good. I believe you will have more than I need.

    Now, my project can continue.

    Thanks again

We don't hold a IBO or ASA sanctioned shoot at our club, YET, but you are welcome to come and photograph our course at any shoot. Bring your bow with you, and you can shoot as our guest. I will even serve as a camera caddy for you. Contact Jay Are and let us know if/when you want to come, or just show up. We'll make you welcome. And even provide lunch.
We are always happy to make new friends with our fellow archers and sponsors.
We'll post pictures soon, maybe of our shoot next Sunday.
Any archer in the Southeast Pa. area is welcome to come, and bring a camera too. We aren't shy.

Does this mean shooters can't have cameras either?
If so that's a bad rule. Some guys don't get to these very often and like to remember when they were there.

I suspect at IBO shoots they don't allow cameras because they would distract shooters. Competition level shooters are sometimes a little highly-strung in my experience. It's understandable. Money and prestige are on the line. They could have gone out afterward with some shooters and given Chris some photo ops without the pressure of the score over them. I'm sure he would have agreed to that. I expect some of the competitors know The rangefinder clause is understandable at a shoot of that level. Estimating range accurately is a required skill.
Anybody can bring a camera to our regular shoots. Just ask people before taking thier picture. (Some of our shooters are a little highly-strung too!)
