I live in Orange, near you. There are 3 places that I know of close. The first I'd recommend is HighTech Archery in Fullerton. Its an shop with tons of stuff and an indoor range. They have classes and stuff there. The staff is super friendly, at least when I've been there. I bought a setup for my wife from them. Its up the road from the college. There is also FS Discount Archery over by Tustin Market Place. Its hard to find and theres no range, its mostly a mail order place but they have alot of stuff and the guys there were really helpful and seemed to know their stuff. I bought my setup from them. There is also a place in Fountain Valley with a range, but I havn't been there yet.

I am new at all this too. I wanted to start with traditional archery and a recurve setup, mainly because I work as a sys admin and there are only so many gadgets and gizmos one can tolerate, and compounds seem to have too much of that for me. Everything I needed to get started (bow, arrows, quiver, targets, guards, etc etc) was about $300. My wifes setup was about the same, but we got nicer arrows for her. I got some cheap GT carbon arrows and the fletching was randomly stuck on so they shot differently from arrow to arrow. I refletched them myself and now they shoot pretty nice actually. My wife got some nicer Easton aluminum arrows that were about double the cost of the GT arrows, but it was obvious why. I am fairly consistant at ~20 yards (in my backyard) and now am looking to bite the bullet and get a compound bow to start hunting because I can't pull more than 40lbs on a recurve.
I'm not sure if Hightech has loaners, but they can measure your draw and all that. You can call and ask.
This stuff is pretty fun... which means The Peoples Repulik of Kalifornia will probably ban it before long or make us register our assault bows
