Default 1st experience with archery

When was your 1st experience with archery.
Mine when i was 10 i had a cousin who ran around the wood's with a irish setter & a stick bow after turkeys in the fall.
he was like fred bear he would get me to throw frisbee's in the air & he would hitem almost every time.
at age 13 he taught me how to shoot & gave me a book called the archer's bible,by fred bear I read that book about 100 time's
when i was 15 i killed 2 deer with him, my dad sayed your wasting your time you cant kill nothing with that stick & string.
I showed him i could.
2 year's later my cousin died when a drunk driver hit him while getting his mail at the mail box,he was 26,his dad gave me his bow.
I thought, he was fred bear, bigger than life.

Awesome story there kbo thanks for sharing. I started when I was about 12. I had a cousin that was more like a brother to me he taught me alot about the outdoors. He was killed in a construction accident when he was about 26 and I still have his bow an old Indian.

I started in the Boy Scouts when I was 11...at summer camp
With those institutional fiberglass bows...when I got home, I found a bear recurve at the flea market for $10...still have it...Got my first compound when I was 13, A bear Black Mag...Still got that one too...
I shot alot until I was around 17 then I found other hobbies...But I picked the bow back up about 10 years ago, took the bowhunter safety course and I was on my way...
Then a good friend of mine took me to my first 3D about 6 yrs ago and now I'm hooked...

with as much money as this HOBBY costs me, I could beat the crap out of my Uncle for getting me started when i was 12 (recurves).....started bowhunting when i was 14, shot my first deer when I was 16

but what really burns me is the fact that he started me going to 3d shoots and now I cant get enough

I started when I was in Boy Scouts, I could not tell you how old I was. 13 maybe ?
I had this pretty nice laminated recurve with a half-dozen or so aluminum arrows for several years. I used to shoot it pretty often and then I just kind of 'forgot' about it.

I started back into it big time several years ago when I was at a buddies farm and we were hanging around drinking a couple of beers and he brings this contraption (compound) out to the yard. I'm thinking, what the heck is that thing ? Then I realized it was a compound bow. He showed me how to use it and, WHAM, my checking account temporarily hits rock bottom.

Now I hunt and shoot 3D for fun and practice. I shoot several times a week in my yard too and have been doing 5 spot indoor the past 4 weeks for the first time.

I got my first bow when I was about 5 or 6. the arrows had suction cups on the end of them. but it was good enough to get me hooked for life. next I started making them out of a string and stick. then I got a store bought bow.I think it was and Indian bow. next I got a herters recurved. I was king of the hill then. been shooting ever since

Started shooting a recurve at age 10. My dad bought me a PSE PULSAR at age 12. Killed my first buck with it at age 13, shot it in the butt, it ran about 250 to 300 yds. and bleed to death. Know I aim for the front shoulder.

I know what you mean, my son at 13 shot his first in the stomach.
I got down on my hands & knee's, no blood trail just tracks & found it some 200yds in a tangle of briers, the proudest moment in my life.

I started when I was 10 or 12... my dad bought me a bow with a sight and I HATED shooting... I was chasing more arrows then I was hitting so I gave it up for about 10 years...

Then I got pissed that I could only hunt 2 weeks a year so I picked it back up but this time I wisened up... and grabbed a left handed bow. now its an addiction

no but I wish I still had it. I bought a 1959 herters catalog off ebay. it brought back a lot of memories. they had beautiful gun stocks , any kind of wood for around 30-40 bucks. sako rifle was 149.00. of course I wasnt making a lot of money then.

Default Great stories guy's

I think we all came into one of the greatest sport's in the world!!
If you shoot old recurve's or modern compound's you have a love for the sport.
I think with the stress of work or any problem's you may face, you can pick up a bow and all your problem's disappear at least for the moment.
In the archer's bible by fred, bear he sayed in the end of his book.
quote:The beginning of Life is like a well bent bow that leap's forth in the flight of an arrow.
awesome statement!
