Vane Selection

I recently was asked by a friend why I shoot feathers and not vanes? I couldn't answer this question because I always shot feathers and so did my father. I have noticed after watching the Pro's on TV and the guys on the ranges they use vanse some are as small as an Inch maybe and other around 3 inches. If i was to switch to vanes in the 3" how much of a difference would that make if im currently shooting 5" FEATHERS. Like more speed Kenitc energy things of that nature?

Feathers are known to be quicker than vanes. Also if you shoot a standared 3 in vane compared to a 5 in feather it will affect your broadhead flight. You can shoot a blazer vane if you can get them to stay on your arrow.

Some people say Feathers are faster than plastic Vanes...I think they get up to speed faster and dont really see any increased speed...I think Feathers are more forgiving than plastic Vanes...Vanes may be more durable over time but I still hunt with feathers even in the rain,I have never had a problem with them..

Have you ever used that feather waterproofer stuff they sell in the stores on yours?

From what I've read and been told by those that shoot feathers, feathers create more drag given the same # of fletchings. This straightens out the arrow flight faster and is a slight advantage for broadhead flight. Also, if the fletching contacts anything, the feather gives more than vanes, and will deflect less(more forgiving). The draw back is that the arrow slows quicker and dropps more beyond 50 yards, or so. In a well tuned/ fast shooting bow, broadhead flight isn't usually an issue except for user error

of which I've been guilty. I prefer Blazer 2" vanes. I've had no problems with them sticking. I use Goat Tough glue.

Only other con regarding feathers other than them getting wet is that they make alot of noise in flight when you get up in the 280+fps range..
