Mouth Shooters

In the Martial Arts world we have "KUCHI BUSHI" which translates to Mouth Warriors. A derogatory term for People who train insufficiently yet become 'masters'. Though we have our fair share in the sport, this isn't about them.

Some of the folks at league last night were teasing me about not shooting "just because my left arm was immobilized" Thye said Hey Look at Justin he shoot with his teeh and he's going to the Para-lympics! Why don't you take some lessons from him?!?!!

Justin is an amazing Archer, that just happens to be afflicted with Cerebral Palsy, so he shoots with his left arm to hold the bow and instead of a D loop, he has a short hunk of braid he clenches in his teeth. He's an amazing shooter and can put up a 300 if he's in the zone.

I'm headed over to the range in a few minutes to see if he can teach me a thing or two a mouth being a Mouth Shooter.

I figure all I need is a Genesis bow, some rope and I'm good to go. As long as I don't rip out ant teeth in the process.

Congrats to Jamie!! That is determination and the ability to overcome obstacles.

There was a fellow in our area years back that broke his shoulder joint drawing his bow back. That had to have smarted. It was then that they found out that he had bone cancer and a section of the shoulder was removed.

To make a long story short, the man fashioned a harness out of car seat belts, mounted a release about the dead center of his chest and shortened his draw considerably. He was able to trigger the bow release with amounted a very dead and useless arm.

Seems like Jamie is cut from the same mold as this man was...Rich Relien.

I’m trying to remember where Jamie and I visited for the longest time –I believe it was the Outdoor Nationals 2008 was he staying in the cabins where we all were?

The host from KY Afield, Tim Farmer, Is a fine indvidual who is handicapable. He also shoots with his teeth. He has taken all types of game with Gun, rod,and a bow. Dont let them get you down. Maybe you could prove your Doc wrong and rehab the heck out of your shoulder and be back shootin soon.

Are from Neosho, Mi. field shoot. We go there maybe once a year and I have had the pleasure of shooting with Jamie there as well. Your right one class act.

I am by nature an over achiever and need to keep myself in check on this one. I will not go against his judgment and advice. He assures me that if I listen to him and do what he and my therapists tell me to do when they tell me, and no more or no less, he will have me pulling 15# in 6 to 8 months, and back to 35# within the year. I'm cool with that... I don;t need more than 35# for 5-Spot, and in TN we have no minimum draw weight to bow hunt deer.

still if you want more speed i would really consider a draw stop

just got back from my first lesson in mouth shooting... Dudes and Dudettes, let me tell you, that's some cool stuff!

With the help of my 16 year old Coach Justin, after about 18 arrows I started to get my form sorted out, and was actually hitting the paper with at least 5 out of 6 arrows.

At 36 arrows, all 6 arrows were grouping pretty well and I was able to start working on actually aiming, which was tough considering I was using a Genesis, with no peep or sight.

My last end, I shot 5 arrows at the NFAA 1-Spot target face and put up X5443, for 21 points. Granted, it was only at 10 Yards, but I was impressed with myself, for it being my first day shooting.

Justin's mom and his tutor were both there and enjoyed watching him teach me. I think he had more fun teaching me than I did shooting!

They took some pictures and promised to E-Mail them to me, I'll post them soon as I get them.

lessons learned:
Do not serve you chew-string, when it gets wet, the serving slides right off.
Even at only 15# of draw weight, your jaw and neck get a serious work-out.
Wear long sleeves, otherwise your bow arm get sprayed with spit every time you "release".

I've tried this it is surprisingly easy to shoot this way.

I basically wanted to show my 4H club kids how Jeff Fabrey (SP) shoots
Jeff is a great shot and has one arm and one leg. he shoots from a wheel chair and seldom misses. He wins Vegas in the freestyle limited devision nearly every year.

Anyway I tied a piece of parachute cord to a genesis and and shot at a 15 yard target and hit the bulls eye on the first try. Ok Ok perhaps it was luck because I didn't dare shoot another one after that. It's nice to have the Kids thing you are some sort of guru!

Dang... I have false teeth and if I did manage to draw the string back I would probably sling out my teeth when I let go, possibly biting the guy in the arse next to me. (How's that for a visual) HEADLINES Man bit in arse by flying teeth

I decided that the "left hand" Cheetah riser I have been saving to build into a 3D/light-medium game hunting bow for my wife should instead (or at least temporarily while the left shoulder is healing up) be made into a mouth bow.

So, to mount on the Cheetah riser, I found some 01H 14" magnum limbs, a "00HL" Fury cam and string set off an old Tigress and started assembling parts...

What I ended up with was a fairly light, easily maneuverable, light draw weight (20-35#) bow perfectly suited for the task.

The chew-strap was made from a length of some 550 "para cord", slipped through the D-Loop, folded back on itself and sewn together.

WORKS GREAT!
