I've never had a deer take a step with a .243 Winchester loaded with Ballistic Tip. I also dropped a decent 8 point buck with a .223 with a Ballistic Silvertip, I just shoulder punched him and he dropped dead in his tracks. But I would say the 20 mm chain gun would do the job just fine
A spine shot which has a smaller target area will drop them, the next closest would be a double lunger – slipping an arrow thru the chest without startling a deer, some will jump ahead a step stand there until they tip over.
Either way I prefer the double lunger once you take the air away they drop fairly close and quick - I have seen solid “heart shots” run dang near 80 yards or more
The only one that is your competitor is the air between your ears!
Lots of good tips, 20mm chain gun and the Ford truck are quickly becoming my favorites!
I lunged one 2 yrs ago, nose down on the ground feeding. Probably 4 seconds, he never stopped eating , til he dropped.
I was sure I had a heart shot and was just proud as can be.
I just assumed that a perfect heart just would give that type of result. It was both lungs.
I still get tingles thinking about that one ! Awesome!
I too have only dropped one in her tracks. Opening day doe last year that was wired pretty tight. She came in to a fawn bleat and she dropped at the sound of the shot and I spined her. I much prefer a solid double lung hit

A 12ga slug to the heart/lungs........but i suppose you mean bow hunting, than a solid spine shot.Seen Bill Jordan while in his tree stand do this in a video, but i don't think he did it on purpose. The buck was just a few yds out and his shot hit high.Dropped the buck in a heart beat.
