At what point as a service provider do you or should you stop being nice to a customer who is arrogant, obnoxious, Totally in the wrong about thier situation, not telling the truth, over the top rude to my employees and myself and flat out being an a-
I'm pretty easy to deal with and will do all thats within my power to help somebody out. But this was ridiculous. I had to do everything I could to not beat the snot out of this guy.

I would say about 10 min before you made this post. I own my own bussiness and sometimes it's better off to just strangle the customer than dealing with them anymore

after the first warning..... don't know about you but i don't put up with BS. after i tell em one time they better change their attitude or it'll get changed for em. might not be the best customer service practice but it never happens more than once.

Update
Well, After chewing me out alittle on the Phone. Oh wait let me explain that. I told this guy we would have his stuff fixed on Wed or Thursday this week. It wasn't a delay on my part, just waiting for parts and such. So he called on Monday morning as soon as I opened and chewed me out because his stuff wasn't ready.
When he came in to pick up his stuff, he went on a tirade about paying for what he claimed was defective. Which it clearly wasn't. It had all the signs of abuse. Plus it was out of warranty. He just couldn't let it go. He just kept going on and on. It was Pete and Repeat. Totally pissed off he said he would pay, but he's never coming back. ( I'm thinking we can only hope) Then he goes on about customer service and how good a customer he is. From my expirence the people who go out of their way to tell you they are a good customer, tend to be the exact opposite. Which in this case was true. I have his previous records and he has always been a pain in the butt.
He then goes on to threaten me about how many people he's going to tell and how much business I'm going to lose. Not to be rude but the first thought in my head was you have never refered anybody to me!
He walked out the door and I'm like thank GOD he finally left. Oh but I was wrong. Not 2 seconds later he walked back through the door in Pete and repeat mode and started all over again.
OK at this point I lost it. I told the guy he was acting like an A-
That he's being all the things I listed in my original post. Not to mention unreasonable. I told him to get out or I'll have the some take him out. Please leave and never come back.
Sorry just needed to vent.

Foe 28 years I delt with customers, most were contractors. At the right point I would say"what can I do to make you happy". You would be surprised what little it would take(most time) to satisfy them.

I was past that point. I asked something along those lines when he was in the first time. His repsonse was " Well I shouldn't have to pay and I would like it fixed right now". Unfortunatly I didn't have what I needed to fix it and he was out of a warranty period and the item was clearly abused.
Unfortunatly, this is the type of customer where I could have fixed his stuff for free, given him his money back from the original purchase, fired all my employees and burned the building down. He still wouldn't have been happy or satisfied.
I got out of my way with just about every person who walks through my door.

I had somebody blame me once because I diagnosed them as a Diabetic, based on their Blood Sugar reading..
The person was Black, 48 years old, and weighed almost 400 pounds, so obviously, it was my fault.

Hypothosis:
People are Stupid.
Maybe it is just me but I try to never yell at people/be a pain in the to people who have the ability to be vindictive towards me i.e. waiters/mechanics/anyone working on my bow/etc. It just isn't worth it and it doesn't improve customer service. If I have a problem with the service I am recieving, I first attempt to take a deep breath and try to calm down. Then I attempt to be rational. And if i am still not satisfied at the end I will simply take my buisness elsewhere next time. This is part of the problem that i have with utilities companies, I have not choice. They are a government sponsored monopoly, and I have definately had customer service problems with them. To the point that I had to take time off of work to go down to their offices to get my problem resolved (and oh did that make me happy).
But Looney it sounds like you attempted to do everything you could to help the person out and they simply had to be difficult, don't feel bad about ur service.

I was going to send them to him with a Nice letter of my own. , but decided just to send him his records. No need to start a war. Especially after reading the letter.
In the letter he typed out a whole account of what happened. Not only did he skew it towards his perspective, making him look better.( Which I figured he would.) His account of what happened didn't even resemble what happened in my office. I understand people only remeber certain things to justify their actions, but this wasn't even close. It was like a complete work of fiction. I'm not sure what he recalled and typed out didn't happen somewhere else. I seriously questioned his metal status after reading the letter. At least if he had mental issues it would explain alot more.

A few years ago I retired from a long career in law enforcement. I started working part time for a good friend who owned a Hunting, fishing, and archery store. I had a few customers who were incredibly rude and obnoxious. I dealt with them by throwing them out of the store.
My friend took me aside and said he despised these jerks as well but he got even by taking their money. I learned a good lesson that day. Smile and take the crispies.
