How do you size up a Rack?
I have noticed that East Coasters count antler points in total to describe the size of a buck, 8 point buck. Over here, living on the west coast, I was taught that if I saw a deer with 4 points on each side, he would be a 4 point buck.
So, do you guys count Total points to make it sound better/bigger since your deer are so tiny over there?
How do you size up a rack? Why?

It does seem to be an east vs west thing. East, total points; west seems to be side x side.

A little known fact !
But here in the tall corn state we count every point over an inch , total that number and if we don't get enough , we just add 5-7 more !
Trully I've shot some nice ten pointers ( 120 class ) , only to go to this state Iowa Deer Classic and see local deer that would make mine look really small and short on points ( by about a 100 ) !

Here we count all the points one inch or better but the next question is how wide and what's he score? Which tell's the real story,East or West.

Here's what I think !
Guess somewhere it must be spring time and those critters that have antlers , of which is being mention here are non-existed there down under this time of year !

I take a tape measure and ask the girl to raise her arms and I measure from around her rack and back torso region.

I do not believe better/bigger has anyting to do with it, as in other endeavors....LOL....
I'm near Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA (and yes a dedicated Conservative!), in some pretty cool Deer Country...here we have always called an 8 pt. an 8 pt., not a 4 X4...(which is wot we call a Truck that gets less stuck), as is often the case in the Prairies...
So, Could be a 9, 11 13 14 pt....
Personally, I subscribe to Pope & Young for measuring and do not count as a point anything less than one inch. (unlike the guys at Hunter's Specialties).
Have two P & Y's so far, looking for 3rd. til season ends this year on Dec. 31.
1st. is 151", next is "Mr. Hook Buck" He was a guarantuan 230 lb. OLDE Monster...Very snarly and ugly looking, but wot a unique antler...his other side was a stubby 1 ft. length....(So I ate well that winter...)
Here's a pic of "Wide Rack Ray", 2011's quarry....been watching this guy for 3 years on cams, 1st. time goin' for 'im! Few days left...we'll see!
Merry Christmas All...as a newbie here, I really am impressed with the site and forums! LOOKIN' for a Mathews....Z-7 Extreme or Magnum....any out there?? LEFT HAND....
