I live in a shotgun only zone for deer hunting (for some reason crop damage permits are rifle only ) and IMHO I ve found most 20 and 12 gauge shotguns with a good rifle barrel only accurate to 150 yards, anything past that and they get squirrelly. Yes people shoot deer every year with shot guns at 200 plus yards but I'm betting more people miss at 200 with a shot gun than connect. If you want a accurate dependable gun at 200 plus yards that is not going to travel to the next town a 45 or 50 cal muzzle loader is the way to go.
I'm not talkin the cheap 200 or 300 dollar specials they are putting out with cheap barrels, I'm talking the top of the line guns, Encore, the high end Knights and there is a couple other companies putting out good barrels. They are not accurate out of the box, they are alot like archery you must do the same thing on each load time after time to get the same impact. Forget the pellets if your going for long range shots, weight your powder on a scale, weight out the bullets and sabot sometimes you'll get a odd ball. Swab your barrel the same way after each shot. I have found heavier bullets are more accurate farther down range, they drop more but they carry better. Not all bullets are created equal, some guns will shoot one brand but not the other. Same with powder, a gun that is shooting bullet "A" well with a 100 grains of powder might not hit with 120 grains. and so on
It takes a little work but you can end up with a great 200 plus yard gun if you do your homework.
