Default How do you measure hunting success??

We all want to kill a big buck. But how do you really measure success? I mean...... Not one time have either of my kids or wife asked me when I pulled in with a deer in the truck, what does it score? They are happy that I have had a successful hunt and congratulate me and are truly happy. For me that is how I measure success. Seeing the smiles on all of our faces is better than 150" of antler any day.

did my heart pound at all???

if it did and i didnt get a deer, its still a successful hunt....

If your heart is pounding and you are sure that the world could hear it, its a success......

If im just in the woods,im happy!
The woods is my church & my Treestand is my pullpit!
And i can see all that the creator has made for me to see while im still alive!
And to see these things and to make choices in killing or not and just watching is in my hands.

If I had to get a deer to have it be successful I would have quit a long time ago. In fact if it was a slam dunk every time it would feel no better than grocery shopping with a heck of a lot more work. I say this because many years I was lucky to see a deer, let alone get a shot off. Mabey I appreciate it more now that our deer numbers are up. I'll tell you it's hard letting one walk after the "dark" years, but it really gets the heart rate going, and no dragging.

I think just having the time to get out and hunt is successful. Filling my freezer is just a bonus.

Now that i've gotten older it's not a do or die thing anymore as it was when i was a lot younger.I've taken more than my share of game and have gotten a little soft with my thoughts. Some of my best hunts in the past 10 years didn't involve killing anything....just watching it was good enough...Don't get me wrong.I'm a serious hunter and thats why i hunt by my self, but when it doesn't pan out their's always tomorrow.Nothing like being in a tree stand when nature starts to turn the light on.

A successful hunt is:

I enjoyed it.
Saw some game.
Discovered new things.
Seen great scenery.

Need not kill something. Would be nice though.

Lots of what you guys said...

- Being outdoors
- Being in a serene environment (no 'pissy' people)
- Shooting the arrow(s)
- Meat in the freezer
- Cooking on the grill
- Deer/Cheese/Jalapeno sausage for the holidays and the months thereafter !

Good thing season is coming up because I don;t have much sausage left... It was a lean year last year...

To me meat in the freezer or a head on the wall is being successfull. The many many days of hunting that i didnt bring home the bacon, ill say were not successfull............ however all those days were Fun times, spending time with close freinds, many many good times and memories that being successfull, will never ever replace. If i had to be successfull everytime i went out to enjoy hunting, well i would have been done along time ago, Its my passion for hunting and the outdoors and good memories and the fun i have that keeps me at it.

Spending time in the woods with my 10yr old. Just to see the excitement and intensity that he exhibits is scuess enough for me. it's is my hope and prayer that he connect this year.

15, even 10 years ago, I measured my hunting success by the size and number of big bucks I put on the wall.

Now that I am older(not old, just older) even though I have made a career change and make my living from the hunting industry, and hunting itself, I measure my hunting success by the smile on my face, and the smiles I can put on the faces around me!

The minute this stuff quits being fun, I am heading back to a 9-5 job.

I measure my success entirely by "Amount of time spent in the woods".

yeah its nice to end the hunt well but I just love being up in a tree and watching the woods come to life around me, or in fall slowly watching the leaves change color and silently fall...

An unsuccessful year for me is one that I don't get to spend more then 3 - 4 weeks in the woods...

My goal is a freezer full of Venison, which means 2 or 3 deer a year. What really makes me happy is when one of these deer is a 8 point or better buck. Being in the woods in the fall is heaven to me and my hunting expierences whith my family and friends, well it doesn't get any better than that.

To me success is when I have done all my preseason preps and it all comes together druing the hunt. This could be looked at from different perspectives like...did I pick the correct location based on my scouting, did I get busted or not by the wind, was i concealed enough, did I pick a tree that puts me in range. And finally if everything was done correct the final one would be if the deer I wanted to shoot got shot!

I want to kill a big one everyshot but I look at the big picture and appreciate what is offerd me. I am happy just being out there and any thing I kill (legal of course) makes me feel extatic.

Aswell my wife and kids are so a happy for me. You should see them, as soon as I come in the kids dance around and my wife fires up the skillet. Cant beat that!
