calculating arrow speed

Hi guys,
I was wanting to know if anyone here could tell me of a program or maybe someone will possibly know how fast my bow is shooting. I am shooting a 346 grain arrow at 58lbs with a 28" draw, I really dont have access to a chronograph. Is there a program I could download from somewhere that could help me out in the future with such changes in arrow weight and draw weight. All input is much appreciated.

I might be able to help, however I need specific information.

Exact arrow your using, who makes it and what's it called, shaft length, tip weight, feathers, vanes, Turbo Nocks or what type, and how long and total arrow weight.

What bow are you shooting, exactly. Draw length, weight, brace height. What's the letoff, what string material or name of string and fingers or release?

I should be able to get it close.

Keith, I am shooting a Mathews Switchback 2005 model with a 28" draw and 58 lbs draw weight. I shoot 29" Easton Fatboy 400 with 80 grain glue ins and 2 inch Blazer vanes. I am shooting factory unibushing and super uni nocks with them. It has a 7" brace height and has the Zebra Barracuda string on it, shooting it with 80% letoff. I am also shooting a release with this setup.

Hey there 12ring I have this little formula I use it is not as good as some software but should get you in the ballpark. I hope this helps and it is good to meet you my archer friend.


You can use the following to work backwards off listed IBO specs, this will put you pretty darn close to chrono:

IBO Specs - 30" draw/70lb draw weight and a 350gr arrow.

For every inch of draw length you go down you will lose 10 FPS

For every 5# draw weight you go down you will lose 10 FPS

For every 3 grains of weight your arrow is over IBO ( 5 grains per pound) you will lose 1 FPS

For every 3 grains of weight you add to your string you will lose 1 FPS.

I was hoping it wasn't a 2005 Bow, the update I don't have.
The specs say IBO of 318 and AMO of 241, under your conditions you are probably around 265/270. I know, probably not much help.

Here's mine. Hoyt Ultramag. 366 gr arrow weight with a 27 1/2 inch draw pulling 60 lbs. 252 fps.

I was thinking about getting a new bow, but looking at the calculations, the new one would only be about 30 fps faster than my old bow. I was looking at the Martin Saber which has an IBO speed of 315-320 fps. I checked mine with a chronograph, and it shoots at 249 fps. I have a Hoyt Supreme with a 65 percent let-off, am shooting a 422 grain Cableas Hunter arrow, 30.5 inch draw lenghth at 60 pounds. The new bow would shoot about 280 fps.

I tried the referenced arrow speed calc link and found that it was very close to my actual chrono speed.
I use a Bowtec pro 40 at 29 inches 50 to 60 lbs, whisker bisquit and a peep sight, arrow weight 347 grs. I clocked it at just under 270 average with finger release at full weight. Gonna try a mech release an see if it goes any faster. At 20-30 yds it makes my my old 45 lb recurve look like its standing still....no disrespect to the recurve... and to Bowtec is totally quiet smooth and fun to shoot.

I have a question about this formula below. I have the new Triumph and I changed the strings/cables to Vapor Trail. I took the speed balls (not sure what they are called) off of the old strings and put them on the VT's. My question is do these actually help with speed and if I leave them on do I count them as string weight in this formula? I wasn't sure if Mathews uses them on the string when they do the IBO speed quote of 325?

Yes they (speed nocks) help, but only if you place them in the correct location. Without them I've heard guys say they lost 8-10fps. I've never heard of anyone including them on the string weight portion when calculating arrow speed, but Im sure some have and were left scratching their heads...

In this program using your pin gaps it will calculate you speed for you.
