Meat hunter for sure, my family goes through 3 a year. It's nice when the meat comes with some nice horns though.

I'm a freezer filler so I tend to take does although once gun season comes in and if I'm behind the curve there isn't a 1.5 year old buck that should feel safe.

lets be honest here...

If I don't kill a buck in a particular year, I claim to be a meat hunter.

Not that this is any surprise, but a nice fat doe tastes a lot better than some old buck. But that old buck looks a heck of a lot nicer on my wall.

I shot a doe already, 3/4 the meat is gone in a few days. I prefer to shoot a buck next but if a big fat doe tempts me, I'll chop her down with the grim reaper. You know...the ones that hang out under your tree at 12 yards and stand perfectly broadside for like 20 minutes.....THWACK!

But, I prefer to shoot a buck. To answer your question, I guess I am both cause early in season I don't think about shooting bucks cause I never see them. After about mid October, I get horns on the brain something bad.

Meat, and then meat, in that order. I've shot a few 8s, but just because they were there. I'll take a 100lb doe all day long. They slide good and eat good. To be honest I would like to take one large racked deer before I die, but I don't want to drag it far.

Start of the season I hunt for a midsize doe for the meat. But if it's a midsize racker or better, he's mine. I don't have a lot of freezer space and I live by myself so I really only need one deer.
Then I'll spend the rest of my hunting time looking for that "special" buck. If I get it or not, so be it. I just enjoy the hunting part of it. I just enjoy being out there. Once I've gotten my skillet needs, the hunt becomes more important than the kill and I have left many a deer over the years walk so someone else may have the chance. Just knowing that I could have gotten them was enough. Might just start taking my camera instead. But this year due to medical reasons I'll be doing neither.

Having a family of 4, and two digs to feed, and unexpectedly having to live off Military E-5 Pay and allowances (I'm a Reservist on Presidential Recall) I could care less about the rack, that is not what is going to put meat in my freezer.

The two best "hunting investments" I've ever made were the Tilia Food Saver vacuum sealer, and a 7 CubicFoot chest freezer. (Of course the season after as I got the 7, I scored a Caribou on Prince Edward Island and had to buy a 21 Cu.Ft.) Follow that by having and a friend of mine owns a meat cutting and packing plant (several actually), and he let me come in and spend a few weekends apprenticing under his master meat cutter.

Tough times are not coming, they are here--NOW! Those who can fish and hunt, and garden, and can & preserve, and of course ferment are going to have a better time of it than most.

If I could have more than one tag per year I would definitely put a doe in the freezer for meat and then hunt for antlers.

I hunt for both. In the part of pa I live in we have to many deer so there is a early doe season before regular state wide season. Get your meat and then wait for that one to go on the wall.

I used to hunt for racks. Word got out and poachers came. These days if it's brown it's down, but if the choice arises, I'll take a button buck or spike over a doe just to keep them horns from growing.

I have NEVER, nor will I EVER, hunt for the "meat". I hunt for the experience, the fun.... and of course, the chance that the buck of a lifetime will walk by at any minute.

Default For me...

For me, it's...

1) First deer, meat for the freezer
2) Second deer, wait for the big one, but may take a smaller one for meat if the opportunity is good.
3) Definately waiting for the big one after two down.

But, I hunt mostly public lands here in Texas so I'm lucky to even get deer #1 down.

Always an early season doe then spend most of my time looking for mature bucks. Another doe or two is bound to find its way to my freezer throughout the season

This coming from a kid named gizim?

There's nothing little about me young fella. If you'll read the statement you quoted me in, you'll find your answer.

Now, for my question, why don't you make good on your deals?
