Looking for Help from the Archery Community
Hello all! I am looking for help from the archery community. I am starting a 4-H Archery program (4-H shooting sports) here in Spring, TX. We haven't even had a practice yet and I've got 19 kids wanting to shoot! Some have bows and accessories, but must don't. So what I am asking you guys for, is for any help at all. We need arrows, youth bows, arm guards, releases, finger tabs, sights, stabs, rests and hip quivers. So who wants to help out some kids get started?????

I am a 4H Shooting Sports leader and instructor in Indiana.
In Indiana we can buy through the DNR hunter ed program at significant discounts.
Not looking at the price list now but going from memory Genesis bows $111, Five dozen arrows - $153, Morrell NASP target (the big, heavy one 3'x3' with stand and cart) - $152 etc.
Check with your state's hunter ed program coordinator to see if you can get similar deals.
PSE has nice youth take-down recurves for $99 plus $17 shipping.
Morrell also makes a much cheaper, lightweight NASP target for about $50 shipped.
I have made several target butts using the foam blocks from TSC and Rural King. They work OK but not as well as store-bought targets.
Also, I encourage you to look into fundraising opportunities and make the kids earn the equipment rather than relying solely on donations.
Raffles are good, if done properly and legally. Our club recently bought a half hog from a local processor for around $150 (I think) and raffled it off at a local festival after selling $1100 in tickets.
Good luck with your program. Archery is our most popular discipline and we offer rifle, pistol, shotgun and muzzleloader as well.

Thanks for the great info!!! We're working on fundraiser ideas right now. I too do not want these kids given everything to them, but yo've got to start some where. I'm hoping the kids will enjoy this stuff just as much I do.

Another suggestion is to get as many low low poundage bows as you can.
My son has been able to draw 40# since he was 10, as have his peers that compete in NFAA events, because they were all taught proper form from an early age and shoot a lot.
You will have many kids that struggle with 10#. You'll have 15 year olds that can't draw 40#.
I have to turn most of our Genesis bows way down for most of the beginners to shoot them.
Also, the recurves and Genesis bows are great for fitting a wide range of shooters. We have some donated compounds that are not very adjustable and only one or two kids can shoot them because the poundage is relatively high and/or the draw lengths are just too long for all but a couple of the teenagers.
I have had older PSE and Bear 70#, 30" DL bows donated before that no kids can shoot. I gladly accepted the donations and sold the bows on AT and bought other needed items with the $.

Hey Firechic,
How many kids need quivers. How long are you doing this program? Short term or all the time. I am thinking, when I can get caught up, I can whip out some simple style quivers for ya. I will see what I can come up with over the next few weeks. PM Sent!!

If you need wrist slings let me know I have some in a box (brand new) all different colors I can ship out right away. I know your into finger slings, but if you want wrist slings I'd be happy to donate a bunch. Gotta get these kids shooting, and excited about their equipment.

The equipment will stay with the Spring 4-H so that those who come and go will not take it with them and so others can use it too.

I have 19 kiddos! some have quivers, some don't. Each kidd that is shooting, has to wear proper saftey eqiupment, i.e. arm guard and quiver. The program... is actually a year round program, just like how we have different types of tournaments. 4H shooting sports is a national organization. I've just started with the archery disciple at my local club. I'm the only one certifited to teach and be with the kids at an event, until I get some more parents certified. So the program will go on as long as I have intrest.

There is a guy on AT (I don't remeber his username) that sells the target bags with a target face on them. All ya gotta do is go down to the local Goodwill store and ask em for all the clothing there gonna throw out. If you use jeans and stuff with metal buttons take those off before stuffing the bags. Old blankets work the best. Stuff them bags full and so up the tops and you got some sweet bag targets for shooting outside at a fraction of the cost...

Thanks Ben!!! Wrist slings are much easier to learn on with a compound. I'll let you know if I need some!
