Going for a healthy weight...
Here's a little background...
I have always been a 'big ol' boy'. Always been a little heavier than most but not necessarily obese or what I would call 'fat', just healthy. Up until 2+/- years ago, since then I have gained 50lbs, with the last 20 coming in the last 5 months. Decided over the holidays that this has got to stop, and I have better get healthy again if I want to see my kids grow up(don't have kids yet, maybe in a few years). So, last night went and joined the gym again and weighed in at 309.2lbs
Yesterday, I also started the Fat Smasher Diet. It was made famous around the archery circle by BigPappa over at AT. He lost over 100lbs in a short amount of time. I am using this inspiration to lose 80lbs in 7 months. I can do it. My goal is to be at 230lbs by the time I turn 30, which is July 30, 2009.
I will track my progress in here:
Day 1: Walked at 3mph for 30min. 309.2lbs
Day 2: stayed tuned

I hear ya TMax! Over on AT there is a weight loss thread, we're weighing in once a week and just being there to support eachother...
I was 304, week 1 303, we'll see on Thurs where I'm at for this week...

Good luck. Loosing weight is tough buisness, but at least you seem motivated to get it done. You'll feel so much better when it's gone, not to mention the exta energy provided by the exercise.

I just got a WII Fit for Those who are video game challenged its an acessory to the latest nintendo system. If your kids have a Wii find a fit. I thought it was a joke. I used it for 30 minutes today and it got my heart going. I am 230 and need to get down to 190-200 range. It will also help you by building your balance, which helps with shooting.

Update
Day 2(Tuesday): Walked 30min at 3.5mph= 307.2lbs
That is 2 lbs in one day. I would like to get 30 or 40 off real quick like, maybe by the end of February, then I can slow down some to about 1 1/2lb a week.
Everyone think 270lb is doable by the end of February??? I DO!!!!

Thats why you weigh in once a week and just report what the numbers say...and they say I didn't loose anything for week one...week two isn't looking soo good either...
don't think my methods are working...time for more extreme measures!!!

With the last kid, my wife weighed 2 pounds less when we checked into the hospital fir delivery, than she did when she got pregnated.
[soapbox]
Seriously though, I learned the hard way, "diets" don't work in the long term, ever! Because it is something you go on and come off again. All the fad diets will work for a while but are un-healthy in the long run do more harm than good. I've tried them and know this, first hand.
I've lost lots of pounds, and have kept it off for two years now. When I got home from The SandBox I was 273 Pounds @ 6'2" I'm now 225 and fluctuate 2-3 pounds but never go above 230. (The french fries at Red Robin are my downfall)
The only thing that works is to eat healthy, appropriate portions, and exercise moderately for more than 1/2 hour at a time. I recently "participated" (it was a case of "do it or get out!") in the US Navy's Ship Shape Program, which is nothing more than Weight Watchers. The reason they work and continue to work is they teach you to read labels, pay attention to portion sizes, and caloric intake and output.
It's really quite simple.. expend more calories than you take in, loose weight.
But you have to be smart about it. if you have 1,800 calories per day all in one or two meals you body stores everything it can. if you have the same 1,800 calories spread out throughout 5 or 7 small snacks all day long you body uses it.
Ohh. another great tip. when eating out, have you server bring a to-go box with your meal and put half of it in the box and close it and put it out of sight before you start eating... you will never miss it, and will have another full meal the next day.
If you have not done so yet, start a food journal, write down everything you put in your mouth, and every thing you do to burn calories.. For the first few weeks just do that only, write it down. Then after a few weeks write it down and write down the calories you took in and calories you spent... at the end if the WEEK tally the all up and see if you are a net gain or loss on calories. go for good weeks not days. Stay away from the scale, it is evil! if you must weigh yourself do it once a week only.
Do things by the week...
Don't say I want to loose 50 pounds in a year,
you mind will sat "eff-you you will not"
Tell yourself "I will loose 1 pound per week"
the net goal is the same, but one sounds much more reasonable and attainable than the other, no?
Don't deprive yourself, if they have key-lime pie on the menu and you love it, go for it! Just be reasonable and have 2 or 3 bites and then get rid of it. I always order desert, but 1 or 2 bites and I'm done and the push it over to my kids, who will eat anything.
[/soapbox]

Squid,
The word diet to me is a lose lose situation. Like you said, diets induce failure due to the very nature of them. What I am doing is not so much a 'diet' for say, but more of a 90 day life change plan. This 'diet' weans you into eating correctly and the appropriate amounts. As far as being unhealthy, the first 4 weeks could constitute as such. I'll will take the lesser of two evils here, the lesser being the diet, the greater being 100lbs over weight. Frankly I want to see my children grow up. My Father died at the age of 39 w/ a heart attack. Everyone thought he was in excellant shape... 5'10" 185, walked 4+ miles a day, coached my sport teams, a generally very active person. My Mother died last spring at the age of 54 w/ heart troubles. She was on the heart transplant list, but didn't make it. I have no choice. I have to get into better physical condition, not only for my self, but for my young wife, my family, and my future children. I owe it to them.
I concur with everything else you say. Smaller portions, snacks, exercize, weight loss goals. I will lose 7 pounds a week for the next 5 weeks. That will put me at 270lbs by the end of February. Then, 2lbs a week for 21 weeks, that puts me at 230lbs for my birthday, July 30. Heck of a birthday present to myself huh?
This 'diet' is helping me retrain the way I think about food. My metabolism and food intake has been jacked up since I was a kid. In my opinion, because of trying to make weight for wrestling. It was a constant cycle of starve benge starve benge. Starve through the week, wrestle on Saturdays, then benge eat. I am now having to take control of the situation.

Update
Haven't had the oppurtunity to excersize much since last Thursday, but portions and eating the right foods have still helped.

45 Min on the Elliptical Machine
296.0 LBS
That's 13.2 LBS in 15 days. That was just 3.6 LBS for the week, but this week will be better

What a great thread! Keep it up, it works!
I am 59 and I began a serious work out and walking plan about 14 months ago.
I lost 40 lbs, (from 260 to 220, then had a serious issue pop up (colon cancer) which took me off my plan for 2 months while I got over surgery. It's all gone now, cancer free!, praise God. I gained about 10 back while I was sitting around through most of hunting season. But I am back at it now.
I am shooting (pun intended) for 200 which is about right for me.
Anyone trying to lose weight, I am praying for you.
Mike
