out door target

It has been a few years since I have been on here. My question is what is the material called to make an outdoor target out of. It comes in 4x8 sheets and is 3/4 inch thick. It is like a fiber insulation board. For the life of me I cant think of what it is called. Getting back into archery like I was a few years back. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thank you etcher1 that is what it is. As for the other two replys I see no humor in them. I feel when people are asking for help that is what we should give them out of respect for them. That is what we are on here for.

you might want to check out excelisor bales. we use them indoors and outdoors. last for ever. about the size of a hay bale.

MO.HICK I am stunned with the two idiotic, stupid, childish( and the list goes on) replies which you received regarding your question. Their idiotic and totally disrespectful replies are causing me to leave this website. Not all members would have treated you so rudely but these two are not people I desire to associate with. I have Been on so many forums from custom cars to AR15's to Bows.. for over 30 plus years...with 1000's of post......I have never seen 2 individuals more uptight then you two guys....Geezs and to revert to Name calling for a simple comment of just a lighthearted fellow is really the childish act....You don't even know me....Guess by your comment you will never will....as for you MO.Hicks I Apologize if I offended you on My simple comment which it seems I have....Good Luck with your outdoor target setup....Kill some of those X spots.....

Carpshooter thank you for your info. Pappy I really am not a uptight person. I to have been on several fourms. The last one I was on got out of control with bad comments in my opinion as with many others that no longer are on there for that reason. I do accept your apology. Glad to here it from you. I am getting back into archery which I dearly love. Just starting to shoot 5 spot which I have never done. I have shot a lot of 3D and am hoping to get back into some of that this summer. Thanks to everyone who replyed to my post and to those who read it.

Shoot Man ....no Harm...I don't wear my feelings on my Sleeves at all.....I myself have just got back into shooting....I use to shoot indoor target about 26 years ago....1986 to be exact....wow how the industry has changed....I was lucky enough to pick-up a really nice older Bowtech target bow (complete) and get back into shooting...still way rusty in getting it dialed in....just need more time behind the string...takes a while when only finding the time to shoot once a week or every other week

Good luck with you Shooting.....great sport for all ages that's for sure....just wish I had those 26 years back......LOL

Here is what many of the clubs around here use and you're in the right state to get the stuff, http://www.huebertfiberboard.com/archery.htm . This stuff is a ton better than the usual fiberboard that you pick up at the home supply stores.

The boards last pretty good in the weather and you actually want them a little weathered so they're easier to pull arrows from. We have them on our outdoor range and so do many others.

The setup we recently started using, after seeing it at other clubs, is like this:

- We set 2 cut down power poles in the dirt about 4 1/2 to 5 feet apart then we topped that with a bridge plank attached by lag bolts and construction adhesive. We have 2 long iron rods with both ends threaded that are attached to the bridge plank at the top (we used cut down landscape timbers as washers and to take up some of the extra rod length). At the bottom of the rods is a shorter bridge plank with the rods through it (again landscape timbers on the bottom). We stack 4' wide by 18" deep pieces of that fiberboard to the wanted height (we do about 4" tall) and top that with a piece of metal flashing that was bent to shed water off the top. We then tighten the nuts on the rods until the planks start to bow a bit and then retighten stuff (both rods and lag bolts) as needed throughout the years. BTW the arrows will pull really hard when those butts are new and EXTREMELY hard if they're new and it happens to be really humid when you shoot them so use a good arrow lube but they do get easier after a few weeks outside.

The main problems we've had with these butts is vandals either shooting them with everything from 12 gauges to airsoft guns (those things can bore a hole deep into a butt) or hitting them with a vehicle to knock them over.

I have made four of these for me and my hunting buddies and they are awesome and hold up well. I fill them with shrink wrap I get from my job sight that we remove the old wrapping from incoming freight and I just ball it up and stuff into these target boxes. The target skins on the front of these come from a link; www.thirdhandarchery.com.
Someone told me a old trampoline will work just as good for the front.
