String Silencers

I shoot a Hoyt Vulcan and I go through the factory string silencers rather quickly, although my latest ones have been on longer than the last two sets. Has anyone noticed a decrease in arrow speed without them? A buddy told me that he heard that taking them off will decrease the speed a few fps. Anyone else heard this? Also, would there be a big sound increase even though it has a string suppressor (like STS) on it? Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

That's what I thought, but he said that if in the right location they act like speed nocks or something.

For the quietest bow possible, I add one of my String Suppressors and use Bowjax String Jax in the speed nock location. I like Quiet!!

Absolutly add a Meanv string supressor, and forget about the dampeners on the string. I no longer need string silencers on my Guardian with a Meanv CSS. Plus I picked up 3-4 fps by doing so.

Bow is as quiet as it every was..

Thanks, I like your setup MeanV, but I already have a string suppressor on the bow. They come from the factory on the new Hoyts. I may take the bow in and do some experimenting with and without the silencers to see if there is a difference in sound or speed.

I heard that location of silencers will have different effects but for the most part I thought they slowed your bow down. With todays bows being so fast I must say I do not know anyone who uses speed balls.

Well I went to the shop yesterday and experimented a little. I was surprised to find out that taking the silencers off made me lose 3 fps. I suppose they were in the sweet spot and acted like speed nocks. I put them back in and had the shop tie them in with some serving. I think they were blowing off because they were sliding up and down and the string was cutting into them. I know 3 fps is not much but I have a very short draw length and want to milk all the speed I can so yardage estimation won't cost me a deer. So with 62 lb draw weight and 26 inch arrows, I'm getting 290 fps with 59 ft lbs of kinetic energy. I can live with that.

Just curious , What arrows are you using? I have a trykon that is a little slower than your speed. I am wondering if the vulcan is that much faster than the trykon or is my arrows heavier.

I am using Gold Tip Expedition Hunters 3355 with 75 grain tips. My arrows average out to about 315 grains total weight and puts me right at 5 grains per pound. What kind of speed you getting with what arrows? My arrows are light but within recommended guidelines and I have plenty of KE for medium game like whitetails.

I am shooting a 385 grain arrow. I am getting 275fps so I guess I aint doin to bad. 27 in draw 67 pounds.

STS/Meanv type surpressor is the way to go and you can lose the stuff on your string.
I recently caved in on this and I'm sorry I didn't use one a long time ago.

Thanks for the advice but it already has a string suppressor on it. They come that way from Hoyt on the Vulcans. I may have the problem solved, only time and a bunch of shots will tell.

I think that sounds about right. It's tough for those of us that have short draws to get close to 300 fps without it getting dangerous or pulling an arm out of socket.
