Hey guys, I'm a complete newbie here with no more than a few hours of experience. I met this old dude who got me into archery. He's got over 40 year's of experience, and is very helpful with advice, and allows me to use his bows (He has a traditional longbow, recurve, and compound) regularly. He recommends that I get my own equipment and start with a recurve. Being on a budget (Under $400), I'm considering on doing so. Should I get my own equipment? Would it help me a lot? Or should I have a feel around using his bows for now? Also, I'd like second opinion, should I go with the traditional longbow, recurve, or compound?

    Thanx.

IMHO you should get your own equipment.

Only you can make the decision on which style of bow to get and that will depend on what you plan to do with it.

    Hunting - compound

Backyard shooting - any of them - a recurve or longbow is probably the simplest

target - depends on the type of competition you want to get into.

There are bows available in all three catagories that you can buy for $400 including accessories and arrows.

I'm just starting out, so my guess I'll be doing target archery for now. Cause there's this archery place near my apartment. Maybe in the near future I might go 3D hunting. Heard that it can be pretty damn fun. Also I heard that the longbow is the hardest to go with for a beginner, since it has no sight, or any of the gadgets recurve or compund has.

Also another question: Whatabout maintenance and upkeep? Which requires the most/least maintenance in terms of time, dedication and cash?

All bows require routine maintenance. Thus, the more stuff you have on your bow could increase that. And, depending on how serious you want to be about archery....That will direct the funds.;)
