sneaking into a stand

Discussion in 'Bowhunting forum' started by buccaneerbowhunter, Nov 2, 2007.

  1. How much sneaking into a stand does everyone do? I try to make as little noise as possible, which is tough with dry leaves on the ground, and go slowly to move over and around obstacles on the ground quietly. Often, though, I think I'd be better getting to the stand as quickly as I can to limit the time I'm making noise and get things quiet in the woods again.

the more i try to be quiet the more noise i make. going to my stand in the morning i try to be as quiet as possible... in the afternoon i try to keep it to a minimal but if theres dry leaves i just try to sound like a squirrel on the ground.

If you are sneaking to your deer stand in the evening use a turkey call while walking to your stand deer will think that you are a turkey walking:biggrin1:
in the mornings use a deer call as you walk to your stand :noidea:

I don't do anything different than a normal walk thru the woods, other than being more alert.

me too....especially with how much rain we have gotten and how much my trails have grown over this year! I have to keep my light on in the mornings for a long time or I will never find my stands!!!

I have had this same Question for years and I don't know the perfect answer. I just try to get to my stand as quickly as possible with as minimal disturbance as possible. But I know a lot of other hunters who walk around there stand in wide sweeps laying scent trails so I don't know if one way works better than another. :noidea:

I just walk in normal in the morning; I just get to my stand an 1 1/2 before light. I guess it just makes me feel like things will be better that way.

    Why!

Have ya ever seen the video's of the Founder of Lone Wolf Treestands?
    Bump and run.
Go shake that buck out of his bed, put your scent out what ever you use and climb up about 20 to 30 feet and set there all day!:biggrin1:
He will come back to his bed if he's a big buck but he will circle before doing it.
If you dont stink or he likes the area he will walk right in!:peace:
    Thats what i do!:biggrin1:

    No!

If i know where a buck is bedded ill bust him in the dark.
He cant smell me and dosnt know what i am because i aproach the stand location if the wind is in my face, bust him and then climb up about 20yds from his bed
I climb sometimes 30ft if he's a big one he cant smell me!
I soft grunt him back and tickle the bag to get him back,he thinks another buck is near his bedding area.
    Now ya know my Trick!

I try to be quiet and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't:noidea: but more than anything i try to avoid stepping on/breaking twigs/sticks....a lot of critters walk around/play in the leaves but seldom do you hear them stepping on and breaking small limbs/twigs and i am always up the tree an hour before it ever starts to peek daylight if hunting in the mornings....there's been a lot of times i'm up the tree even sooner than that.I've got a friend that i use to hunt with but any time we hooked up we could never get there earlly enough(he liked to get in his stand 10/15 minutes before day light) for me so several years ago i just started hunting alone. It's a loooong walk to my stands and i like to give the woods plenty of time to quiet down.

it seems to me the quieter it try to be the more noise i make. i do however periodically rake away the sticks off the trail where i walk in at. other than that i'm blessed to be in an area wheres theres crap loads of deer, so if i do spook one i know ill still be seeing deer.
