Ok fellars anybody git me started on laying out a 3 tab shingle roof. your gonna have ta be pretty discriptive for this Hillybilly. tkx:noidea:

  2. start at one of the bottom corners and work your way up and across, make sure the joints are staggarded. Starting is the hardest part, but once you get started it goes along real easy.

Use chalk lines. They take a while to get snapped, but boy do they save headaches in the long run. I always snapped a line for every other horizontal run of shingles.

Put 2 roofing nails, one on each side of the cut out. This will hold the shingle better and not pull out during any high winds.

I usually put 4 nails in per shingle. 1 on each end and one above each rain groove. Not only does this help keep them down in high winds, but nailing above the rain groove ensures your nails won't end up showing through the next courses rain grooves and they are staggered....:peace:

What I do is 6 nails per shingle. I do not put the nails directly above the slot, but above and on the sides of the slot.

    Smokes,

PM me a phone number, and I will explain it the easy way to lay out a roof. Also, if you give me the dimensions of your project, I can do a "blueprint" for you, and email it as a pdf. A little piece of information to put your mind at ease. I am a structural engineer that specializes in residential construction. I do this every day for a large clientel of proffessional builders.

I know this isn't what you asked about but for no more than what they cost..architect shingles are the way to go.Easy to install and lasts a lot longer....and any chances for a leak is a lot slimmer.
