After watching my brother hunt a few times, I'm trying to take up archery. I've already tried a recurve, and am alright with it, but want to use compounds. If you want to help, please remember while editing this that I'm 13 and 5' 8.5" This is my list, if you know of any more efficient items, less costly duplicates, or other essentials, it would be much appreciated if you'd post here and notify me. Get some decent binos. You won't believe how much more you can see using them. Especially in low light.
Welcome to the forum. I can give you my opinion, but archery is a greatly custom sport. Everyone's wants, needs, and likes are different. All you can do is test stuff out, touch as much stuff as you can. The Nikon 440 rangefinder has an 8X lens. Alot of times I won't bring my bino's in the feild to hunt. I use them mainly to scout.

As it stands, this is what my list is: Core Bow) Parker BuckHunter Compound Bow & Outfitter Package ($369.95) Bow Case) Plano Case ($24.99) Quiver) Anything (</= $19.99) I'm still wavering between hip quiver or bow mount quiver... Arrows) 28" Carbon Arrows (x3) ($8.97) Broadheads) Woodsman Broadheads 150gr Screw-In 6-Pack ($27.99) Armguard) Anything (</= $9.99) Mechanical Release) Tru-Ball(?) Bow Holder) EZ Hanger 3-Arm Multi Purpose Bow Holder ($14.99) [$425] {$1,392} <---> {$1,432} Do I need urine/drags or decoys? What about antlers? And brokenarrow, when you said that the rangefinder has 8x lens, do you mean I don't need another set of bino's? Thanks again!
I carry a rattle bag, it cost like $10. A 3 pack of Tink's scent bombs is like $6. Scents can go from $5-$50. I like Tink's 69. I don't use a drag. Scent control can get expensive it depending on the system you use(hunter spec., Dead Down Wind...). I don't use decoys but I have friends that do with mixed results... That's something you can add later. As far as bino's, it pays to have a good set for scouting or if you hunt wide open areas. But if you hunt heavy cover, use your rangefinder. It's 1 less thing to carry. I also bought a spotting scope for scouting now I really only use my bino's for 3D.

Here's something else-won't change the price any but 150gr broadheads are pretty heavy. Most go with 75-125gr with 100gr probably being the most popular.
Okay, thanks! Added in a Quiver that I thought was kind of nice, changed to 100gr broadheads, and added links!
you can save a few dollars by looking into the Moosy oak APX line of base layers.....I have them and love them...... I will go look for a link.....but I got mine for 39.99top and 39.99 bottem plus had a spend 50 dollars get $10 off gift certificate at GM.... here is the link http://www.mossyoakapparel.com/view...duct_category_id--110/request_apx_type_id--30 look around on the site the have different layers, with and w/o scent stopper......
Okay, Thanks! I found it for $28.99 at Ye Olde Archery Shoppe! Saved... go w/the expidition weight its only a couple bucks more and it will work longer in the season.....ie be warmer when the cool weather sets in....
Okay, Thanks! Having an aerosol can of scent-retardant on hand is a good idea as well, right? Is it better to have buck scents or doe scents?
Looking at the bow, it has a sling on it so you wont need that the sight should be fine to start with you can always upgrade...it also looks like it comes w/ a wisker biscuit(which is the finest hunting rest ever made IMHO) so I would say just a stabilizer and maybe some limbsavers (I didn't see them on the bow but I did see string leeches) I was also gonna say something about those broadheads but I see someone else did..
What about arrows????? You said $8.97 that's [email protected] 1/2 doz. What brand? I shoot CX's, the CX Maximas are a real nice arrow too. http://www.keystonecountrystore.com...a_Arrows_with_Vanes/Page_1/ARFMMCFV2_250.html
I took off the sling, and changed the prices. Also, I don't think I made the arrow prices clear. The Gander Mountain around here sells carbon arrows for $2.99 apiece. I'm buying 3, so it comes to $8.97. Are these good, or should I switch to those maximas? Do you think I need more? I can go up to 1/2 dozen. Also, Having an aerosol can of scent-retardant on hand is a good idea as well, right? And is it better to have buck scents or doe scents, or should I get both? Is Gel better, that scent bomb thing better, or urine/estrous? I dont think you should consentrate so much on getting into scents right now....I dont know how long your season is but I always like to buy scents fresh each year if possible.....sometimes I may not use any.....more important is to get your bow and get shooting.....you can get these other items in dribs and drabs....like I have.....over the years I have bought things here and there.... I dont think you can buy everything you will need....there is always something to buy..... As far as arrows go I never buy cheap arrows anymore....just not worth the money you may save....if its just to get shooting then fine....but you will upgrade eventallly....
